Howdy,
A friend of mine is looking to buy the Windows 8 upgrade whilst its still cheap, however the current O/S he's using (Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit) isn't strictly ...legit....does this mean he cant use the current O/S to install Windows 8 as an upgrade or will it still work for him?

Should still work!

I believe it runs the upgrade compatibility program anyway before it lets you purchase!

Probably not.

Try
Upgrade Assistant:

Call Microsoft.

Enterprise is not a retail SKU, and if I'm not mistaken will not allow an upgrade.

I haven't tried this scenario since my licenses are all legit.
Your friend could avoid this issue in the future by just buying a System Builder copy.

It has a Personal Use license for home users.

I don't imagine it working if it tried to validate the old Win 7 install, though I'm also not sure if there's an upgrade path from enterprise.

It would probably work if he ran the upgrade assistant in compatibility mode for XP or Vista, but it would be a violation of his licensing terms.

Nope, won't work. Tried it already for a customer. :(

Indeed, I upgraded from the release preview of Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro for £25.

Also I've read that if you upgrade with the "New PC" price of £15, it doesn't actually check if your computer matches, so you could just enter the details of a new PC and download for £15

They had fixed this by last Sunday.

Fixed which? I upgraded from the release preview last night so I'm guessing you're not talking about that and MS already said upgrading from the RP would be a legit method.

Just the other day someone here ran the upgrade advisor on the Win 8 Enterprise trial in windows 7 compatibility mode and it let them buy the windows 8 upgrade

And yes apparently running it on a non legit but activated version of 7 will also work according to different sites

I don't think MS are so concerned about how people get to Windows 8 but just that they do, cos they seem to be figuring on the new integrated store making a lot of revenue, I'm not confident it will.

On another subject, anyone submitted a request for the free Media Center upgrade? How long does it take? I use Media Center for watching TV on my computer and I'm missing it already, don't wanna miss the Saturday night tele. (In case anyone doesn't know about this offer - http://windows.micro...8/feature-packs - Offer valid from October 26, 2012, until January 31, 2013)
