antivirus for windows 8 ?

Recommended Posts

P.S. To those people replying MSE, MSE is NOT Compatible with Windows 8 according to the Windows 8 Upgrade Advisor and will Prompt You to Remove it Before Upgrading to Windows 8.

It does this because the MSE anti-virus/anti-malware engine is now built into Windows 8 as part of Windows Defender, which makes MSE redundant - ergo you're advised to uninstall it prior to upgrading. It also means therefore that out of the box, every copy of Windows 8 comes complete with working anti-virus protection.

You don't need any. Like Scorpio RGc1 said, it already comes with Windows Defender (MSE) built-in. There is not need to install extra AV garbage on it that will likely slow it down to a drag. You already have all the protection you need. Stay away from porn, poker sites, stupid ads offering you free iPads and use common sense along with Windows Defender and you will be just fine.

the purpose of protection I think is to allow you to surf freely without having to worry about where you go, even sites like porn, poker sites, stupid ads offering you free iPads. If you have to worry about it, maybe its time to replace it.

As I said, Avast will run on Windows 8 without needing to do any Tricks like using Windows 8 Compatibility Mode to run the Program and is now actually Certified by Microsoft to run on Windows 8 with out any Major Problems. My Recommendation is to use Avast Internet Security on Windows 8. It runs just fine on it. Just FYI.

Avast was a great piece of software. However, it has been known to give a ton of false positives and can cause connectivity issues.

I have never had any False Positives with Avast. I will also note that both Avast Free Edition and Avast Free Edition for Mac is the Number 1 Download on CNet's Download Website. As for Connectivity Issues, most of the time my Connectivity Issues are due to Verizon Wireless 4G LTE issues and NOT Avast. Just FYI.

...it's not compatible because it's baked into the OS now. So you don't actually need to install, ANYTHING! What a novel concept :)

If you want to do all that and not worry about viruses then use Linux. :)

Even with Windows, I don't worry at all, and i use only 1 product and surf warez, porn, torrents, all of it... been worry fee now for 4 years... Thanks Malwarebytes Pro.

I just use virtualbox with a simple installation of xp for all my "dodgy" activities :)

Create the VM, Compress and backup the HD Image, if I get an infection of any kind, just restore the image from the back and start all over. Simplez

The only issue I have with avast on Windows 8 is that it blocks connections for some Modern apps which do include Netflix and TuneIn Radio to name a few. You have to make exceptions in the Web Shield or else expect it to give problems. Any clues as to why? TuneIn Radio would give "Stream Error" every time no matter what station and Netflix would have issues connecting after reaching a 97% buffer and after finding Avast interferes with some apps its pretty annoying..

I tried AVAST! it was not compatible at all. Gave me constant bsods. According to Eset, their smart security is supported by win 8.

avast just updated last week to fix those bsod problems, why not try it out again

I don't think you should stay away from porn ... but the rest I agree ..

MSE....meh

@warwagon: LOL

@OP: Microsoft Sex Essentials :shiftyninja: is already packed and ready for you to UNLOAD! if you want more protection sub to MBam. wonders if anyone will notice my bad attempt at making MSE sound like awesome pr0n? ^.^

TCA:win8

MSE (i.e. Windows Defender in Windows 8) is a perfect , low footprint, stable, and effective AV in my opinion. Everything else that I have experience using, is bloatware.

Although, Avast and Kapersky 2013 are reasonable, mid-footprint, alternatives, They just add on top of WinDefender that's already part of the system. , causing redundancy. ... steer CLEAR of horrible high-footprint garbage wares such as McAfee, or Norton.

Just opinions.

    • Google reshuffles its AI coding team as it struggles to catch Anthropic by Karthik Mudaliar Google is already reorganizing the AI coding “strike team” it created roughly two months ago, as it attempts to find ways to close the gap with Anthropic in one of generative AI’s most commercially important areas. According to The Information, Google DeepMind is expanding the team’s focus to include “midtraining,” rather than concentrating only on coding tools and agents. Midtraining takes place after a model’s broad initial training but before the final stages that prepare it to follow instructions and perform specific tasks. In simple terms, it gives developers another opportunity to expose a model to carefully selected data before it is polished for release. That could help Google improve Gemini’s underlying coding abilities instead of relying only on better prompts, interfaces, or post-training. Previous research has found that midtraining can be particularly effective for code and mathematics, where models must move from general language knowledge to more structured tasks. Google reportedly created the original strike team in April. It was led by Google DeepMind research engineer Sebastian Borgeaud, who previously worked on model pretraining, and focused on complex, long-running programming jobs. Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Google DeepMind chief technology officer Koray Kavukcuoglu were also reportedly involved in the effort. DeepMind researchers were said to believe that Anthropic’s coding tools were outperforming Google’s Gemini models, prompting the company to give the project more attention. Anthropic has made coding a central part of its AI strategy through Claude Code and its Claude model family. The company has continued improving that area, with Claude Opus 4.8 offering upgrades for coding and other agentic tasks, along with the now-unavailable Mythos and Fable models. The reshuffle also comes at a time when Google faces increased competition for AI researchers. Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer recently announced that he was leaving Google for OpenAI, while two other researchers who contributed to Gemini and DeepMind projects are reportedly preparing to join Anthropic. It remains unclear whether the reorganized team will produce a new public Gemini model or developer product. No release date, team size, or specific performance target has been disclosed.
