I am on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Do I use the Windows 8 Pro DVD to do an upgrade from Win7, or can I do a completely clean install of Win8?

to do an Upgrade you will need to have windows 7 installed. If you prefer to do a full wipe and reinstall you can. however, you need to make sure that is the version you purchased. The upgrade version will not do a full install.

Pro for windows 8 is the equivalent of the Ultimate and Pro editions of 7 you can do an upgrade from ultimate to pro 8 without issue.

I bought Windows 8 Pro for $69 + tax, came to $80.

So, I assume that is just the upgrade version that I have?

The upgrade version can do a full install, if you want it to. It can't do a full install from a bare disk, without work arounds, but you can load it in Windows 7, have the installer wipe the disk and install Windows 8 without issue.

Yep, that's an upgrade version. The only full version you can buy is for system builders.

I forgot to ask, can I do a clean upgrade install, where I upgrade from Windows 7 but wipe everything in the process so it's like a completely new install of the OS?

Yep, you have the option to wipe the drive clean before the install so long as you run it as an upgrade from 7 from what I've read

That's right. You have three options when you start the upgrade:
1) Keep your files, settings and installed applications
2) Keep your files (and maybe some settings - I can't remember)
3) Perform a clean install.

This last option removes your Windows 7 installation completely.

OP, you could always stick the DVD in your PC and start the upgrade process to confirm all this. The three options above are available at the start of the process and you can back out without doing any harm to your current installation.
