Password managers?

Question

I thought LastPass was supposed to be great, but it doesn't seem to be what i'm looking for.

Installed it on my machine, had all my passwords saved to my account, formatted the HDD, got it up & running again.

Logged in to LastPass thinking there'd be an option to import all my passwords to my browser - no. In fact there's no list of passwords listed any more. They've gone.

Is there something that would import my passwords in this way?

You shouldn't have to import them. LastPass is cloud based. Once you login with your lastPass Identity, all of your passwords should be able to be accessed via online, in your vault. What happens when you go to your vault? Is there nothing in there?

Yeah, sounds like you're not using Lastpass correctly.

You save your passwords to Lastpass and they are available on any computer you install the extension on (or the website if you're on a public machine)

I've always been sceptical of password managers. If a person somehow gets a hold of ONE password then he has access to all your password.

Not only skeptical, but such a security risk, you may as well have them written on a piece of paper laying right next to your computer!

No way would I store my passwords in the clouds either!!

Edit:

Jesus petes!! 4 freaking minutes to get this post to go through and it hasn't actually gone through yet because I had to refresh the page and add this line!! Somebody pm me when this forum actually starts working again!!

Not all password managers are the same some give you the ability to use a keyfile and lock it to your user account.[RISKY]

Even then this is when you should have your password memorise and never written down.

keepass comes to mind.

There is that I just use a really long pass phrase as my master password, something like:

How many o's are in orange

The chances of someone guessing that are relatively slim, it's next to impossible for someone to brute force it and it's easy to remember unlike a random string of characters and symbols.

Ive been using lastpass for years without any issues, as people have said you re-install the plugin and all your passwords are there ready to use.

As for the comments that there is always a possibility that someone cracks that one password, thats true. Any password on any ccount could just as easilly get cracked and in "most" cases people use the same password anyhow. With las pass you use one password to get in then set that to do all the others with its generator = more security on all the other sites. nly downsides is you need to log into get a copy of the password if you can not remember it.

Personally i think its safer, of cause with the amount of hacking tht goes on i could be wrong but then they would need to decipher it anyhow.

"In fact there's no list of passwords listed any more. They've gone."

You were not using lastpass correctly then. As stated passwords stored in the cloud, I use lastpass on all my machines work, home, mobile (blackberry, kindle). I create a new account somewhere or change a password at work, I get home and there you go password updated or site listed, etc.

My passwords are all different random 14+ characters - no way I could remember them all. I remember my lastpass password, 23 Characters long.

If you want you could even setup 2 factor auth to get into your passwords. Your passwords are encrypted locally before being sent to the cloud, lastpass has no access to them. So unless you don't trust AES-256 whats the issue?

Use the tool correctly and it works great. And no its not the same as storing your passwords on a piece of paper next to your computer in clear text ;) As to keepass -- same concept, just encrypted file not in the cloud. Which is one of the best features of lastpass - I have access to my passwords on all my devices in a secure manner.

    • It sounds like you’re trying to rewrite a narrative to align this layoff with your political beliefs. Games can be horrible, whatever backwards notions you have don’t change that bungie has problems, mostly with just bad games, and arrogance. When they pushed Microsoft to let them be independent they lost their way. They hired on a bunch of people and they couldn’t justify the employee count consistent with their revenue.
