Ok so I am looking at going back Android but a friend of mine has the iPhone and still wants to be able to text message back and forth with me. I have unlimited messaging plan, but he does not have a messaging plan at all. The way we did it before was strictly through iMessage which is free.

My question is, is there any way we can continue to text each other without him having to sign up for a messaging plan?

Whatsapp is probably the best bet.

Since you're in the US, Google Voice would be extremely viable, as would WhatsApp, but since GV doesn't require an additional account I would go with that.

If you have a mac you can remotely control/VNC then you can use the iMessages app on that

WhatsApp. It also uses your phone number, extremely popular in some European countries too.

WhatsApp I have heard good things about. My question though, is do both users have to have WhatsApp or can he just use it since he doesn't have the messaging plan and I will get them in my normal messaging app?

You both need to have Whatsapp. But it is definitely the option that I would go for, I use it all the time with family and friends.

A solution where you get them in your normal messaging app doesn't exist...
