Neowin's Official Minecraft Server

Recommended Posts

Before a friend of mine started a private Minecraft server (which I am hosting using Minecraft Server Manager), I played on a public server that was very close to vanilla but strictly banned mods. While I'm not sure exactly which mods the admin used server-side, he placed a 30 minute ban on all users detected using mods (such as flying, invisible blocks, super-speed, etc.) and automatically blacklisted them the fourth time they were detected in 24 hours. He also ran a website where he posted announcements, users reported griefers, and bans could be contested.

I remember one time specifically where a new user logged on and no more than 30 seconds later a message appeared in chat announcing that the user had been banned for flying. As soon as his temporary ban was lifted, he repeated the same thing all over again. When he logged on after getting banned the third time, someone told him that this is a strictly vanilla server and he should really stop attempting to use mods. His response was, "But I like flying...". He was permanently banned about 30 seconds later.

While this strategy should probably be tweaked to fit Neowin's needs better (especially if this is a whitelisted, members-only server), I really like the concept.

Meh...

I think it should be more about fun and less about trying to figure out what rules we need.

I think it's important that everyone has his or her own area, which shouldn't be too small, but also not ridiculously huge, where he or she can build anything that's legal to depict and then some public grounds that can be worked on for for groups.

Both these areas use permissions so that only certain members can edit the blocks there.

Then there should be a free for all area, where everything is permitted.

That's how I'd do it.

By the way: I'd love to be in charge of building a good transportation system that works well.

I have some awesome concepts for subways, elevated railways, cable cars and probably more.

Just saying. I love all things transportation, so if you guys are interested in a good transportation infrastructure, I can be put into charge. (Y)

*stops bragging* :p

I like that idea like you could have a town with lots of land for building houses and then the wilderness where anything goes.

The good transport system sounds awesome as well.

Anyway, could we get a poll made so we can get a more accurate consensus made of what everyone wants?

poll options could be:

Survival Vanilla

Creative Vanilla

Vanilla with both a survival & creative world (using the MultiWord bukkit plugin)

Tekkit Survival

We've all got to remember though that we're going to be playing with users of varying different skill levels and play styles. Some may just want to dig and explore, some may just want to build and create a working economy, some may want to just mess around and kill time.

I think we should just have our own areas and decide between ourselves if we want to link some things together, not everyone is going to want the same ideas.

I tend to just build in any open area I see fit, and if I do happen to cross over into somebody else's domain either underground or on the surface, I'll either build some sort of wall or doorway, or discuss with whoever area I've ventured into if I can eat into their space or not. :p

I would suggest a spawn area with some basic homes and farms as starting point. Players can then go and explore the world on their own. I'll be the one building the roads between the various spots. :p

Did no one ever play on Dynamic Squids server before? It was never white listed and everyone got on well. Just do what you did before Timan, survival with bukkit, so we can lock chests.

Also, build a prison in the main spawn where you can teleport criminals / trolls that can't break out.

I'm quite sure it's possible to just run a survival and creative world next to each other using some plugin.

I would rather play Survival, no mods (which require client mods) but a few plugins for protection and other basic stuff. No vanilla for the sake of vanilla please :/

(And people, there's a difference between mods and plugins :p)

Upon doing some research I would say we should avoid any mods that add any extra blocks or interfaces to the game.

I've been playing Tekkit for a good while now and I recently switched back to Vanilla, and the performance increase is incredible. Tekkit runs like ass compared to Vanilla Minecraft.

Now i've got more time to post.

Should be Multiworld

- Survival - no addons (for normal folk) but mods can lock chests for people, protect some lands/buildings, but try leave as much as feasibly vanilla.

- Creative - same as what DynamicSquid was like, but perhaps a SuperUser group who get some WorldEdit permissions as well as Essentials. And Mods would have more still.

- Flatland Creative (Spriteland) - this would be restricted so people didn't wander miles and miles and miles.

So i think there is plenty of interest so we should start a poll to get this server rolling. I cant wait to jump on the server and build with everyone here.

Excellent suggestion. Add all former DynamicSquid admins/mods to the 'super user' group and we're set. :p

    • Carol, Windows XP is still being used today only in a small capacity. It is still the best OS there is due to its backwards compatibility with other older software, the customization features, and friendly UI, and people often feel that upgrading to newer OSes is cost prohibitive in specialized Industries or developing countries, so the market share as of now is around 0.2%-0.3%
    • If I could, I would commemorate it the best way possible: Replacing old machines that are still running Windows XP with something more modern, stable and better.     Noone and nothing should be running Windows XP in 2026.
    • Google's new hand-wave reCAPTCHA can be bypassed with a stock photo by Ivan Jenic Image: Screenshot Google is testing a new reCAPTCHA method that asks you to wave at your camera to prove you're human. So, besides solving puzzles and reading distorted text, you can now use your computer’s camera to pass the verification test. When the hand gesture verification is triggered, your browser asks for camera access and prompts you to perform a simple gesture, like a wave or an open palm. Google says it records a short video of the movement and uses AI to extract 21 hand-knuckle coordinates to complete the verification process. The video is then immediately deleted, and Google swears it doesn't keep it. The process alone can be uncomfortable for people who wouldn’t want their biometric data, which hand scans technically qualify as, recorded. But it gets even more nuanced, as early testers discovered that the new hand-waving reCAPTCHA can be passed with a simple stock image. A user on X tested the new challenge using a stock image of a hand fed through OBS Virtual Camera, and it passed. I wanted to verify it, so I tried the same thing. It took me a few tries and a few stock images, but in the end, I was also able to pass the test. I simply had to readjust the stock image of a generic person waving inside OBS, and Google’s mechanism registered it as a legitimate hand gesture. Once again, it didn’t even have to be a video or an AI-generated hand animation. Given the simplicity of the process, the entire action can be automated in minutes. All it takes is a simple Python script to render the new reCAPTCHA method obsolete. And it doesn’t even have to be an AI bot, which is usually used for solving puzzles and other verification methods. The new reCAPTCHA method is still in its early phase, and Google will, hopefully, update its AI to at least reject still images. However, this incident, combined with users’ initial skepticism about Google’s practices regarding user data, likely won’t make too many people wave at the camera anytime soon.
