Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows - No windows 8 support?

Recommended Posts

Ever since I've installed Windows 8 my controller has a flashing green light under the number 1 every time I use it. Sometimes it just suddenly turns off.

I thought it was a driver issue so I went to Windows device manager and saw that it is recognized by the system (Like you would expect) although i didn't installed any drivers.

On the Microsoft site: http://www.microsoft...9-00011#details Windows 8 doesn't support this controller. (?!)

System Requirements

Computer/Operating System

  • Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), (excluding Windows XP 64-bit)
  • Pentium 300 MHz or Higher

Anyone else is having issues with this controller under Windows 8?

Any one knows what a flashing light under 1 says? (Tried new batteries)

Maybe I should install the Windows 7 x64 drivers?

Thanks

I am running Windows 8 but with a wired USB controller and have had no issues. I would suggest running the Win 7 drivers and see if that works. How are you connecting the wireless controller to your PC (not familiar with the wireless controller apart from using the console itself)?

I plugged my wired controller in and it installed / runs perfectly.

You do know you have to get the receiver right? The wireless controller USB cord just supplies power: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2

Using wireless receiver and controller on Windows 8 desktop and Surface Tablet with no issues.

flashing lights usually mean low battery, did you try replacing them with brand new set?

if you are using rechargable, remember that rechargable batteries are not forever, eventually they will stop holding charge.

I had a set that after a while would partially charge, and last only few minutes.

Did you do an upgrade from 7 or fresh install of 8?

Mine works without issue on my virtual machine for Windows 8 Pro.

A Fresh install.

It comes with a receiver plugged to the computer with usb.

Of course. I have this controller for a long time.

There's a new set inside. When the battery runs low, if i remember correctly, the lights spin. The case here that just one light flashes.

The light indicates what controller is connected. ie. if you had 4 controllers each would have a light under one of the numbers. Normally it should be solid, not flashing. It flashes when the battery is low or there is no connection to the receiver. I have a wireless controller working fine on Windows 8 with the default drivers.

The wireless receiver for the controller has an issue where a tiny smd fuse inside it will break.

mine usually gave a low high pitched whining sound when it happened.

I know that fuse. I soldered it a while back :). My receiver stopped working completely so I had nothing to lose.

I use my controller on daily basis and this error occurred on the day I switched to Windows 8. Could be a weird coincidence but I doubt it.

I knew the light indicates what controller is connected. Didn't knew about the "no connection" when it flashes. So you're saying there's a problem with the receiver after all? hmm

Works fine on mine. If you go to update drivers, do browse on my computer, there's a category called Microsoft Wireless controllers or something similar, and there's a driver for it in there.

Yes, It didn't do much and kept the same version of drivers I already have: 6.2.9200.16384

Mine flashes if I turn off my pc when the controller is still on, so I assume it means there's no connection to the receiver. I'm not at home right now so I can't test it.

Have you tried pressing the button on the receiver and controller to make sure they're synched?

Yea, my first try. The controller is working and responsive so I'm guessing it's half synced if that's a thing.

The problem starts when it starts to blink and sometimes shuts down. And if it doesn't shuts down the blinking is very distracting.

That sounds like a low-battery problem to me.

I have a "ripped off" xbox wireless connector. Hence, the OS does not auto-detect it.

I downloaded the Windows 7 Drivers (64-bit for my machine) and installed them accordingly. Used the Microsoft Class driver and boom, no problems so far. Maybe that's what you should do.

No blinking lights or connecting dropouts.

Tested on Windows 7 (64-bit) + Windows 8 (64-bit) DP - RTM.

My official receiver picked up fine in Devices under Windows 8 Pro x64 - no extra drivers were needed.

My 3rd party receiver on the HTPC (Server 2012 x64) required installing the Windows 7 x64 package (Xbox360_64Eng.exe) then force installing the driver from the installation directory @ "%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Xbox 360 Accessories\Xusb21.inf"

If you have issues with pairing, use the play 'n' charge cable as it instantly pairs to Xbox 360 or PC when the controller is plugged in.
