T-Mobile HTC 8X Free and Cancel Question

Recommended Posts

I want to get the HTC 8X from T-Mobile. I'm on the "Value Package" plan. Which you have to pay full price on phones but you get a cheaper monthly plan. The service is only cheap if you get 5 lines which I have. My whole family is on which we pay about $180 a month. That gives us 1000 minutes and unlimited text and internet (4G for 5GB). Service is not great but for the price you can't beat. Downside you can't get the HTC Windows Phone 8X for Free. You have to pay $600 for the full price of the phone.

I want to get around this by starting up a new contract and get the cheapest plan which comes to $39.99 plus $20 for internet and cancel it on the same month for $200. At the end, I will be spending $260 for the phone. My only issue is that they may want the phone back and I pay $260 for nothing. I really need to change my Nokia 710 which sucks.

Do you think I should not have any issues with this? Need to know in a few hours because the special will end today "Cyber Monday Special".

Sounds like a workable plan, just be sure to buy directly through a t-mobile branch (not an "authorized seller") as 3rd parties sometimes charge an additional cancellation fee, for example best buy mobile solutions charges $500 more.

It's on the T-Mobile website. So it's through T-Mobile. I just want to make sure this will work.

You can do this without issue. They won't want the phone back. I have done this in issues with carriers where the phone is cheaper while swallowing the ETF than without.

Do regularly try to rip off companies or just the ones trying to give a great deal?

It is not ripping off companies when their rules allow this. Besides, it is not like the phone company will be hurting, they over charge for their services.

Order the phone and will cancel it when I get my $100 rebate!

You probably won't get the rebate unless you stay for 2 months or more. Rebates usually take 1 or more months to come and the service has to be active the whole time. If you want the rebate you will end up having to pay for at least 2 months of service and the ETF. The phone service will come out to $70 or more if it's quoted as $60 (there are TONS of taxes on phone service, usually turns out to be about 20% more than the pre-tax price). So that's $70+$70+200 = $340. That's still much cheaper than the MSRP price or the eBay price, though.

Probably a better idea to just cancel it right away and not bother with the rebate. That way you pay $100+$70+$200 = $370 but don't have to deal with the rebate.

    • Ridiculous claim that the labor cost difference of $6000 annually would increase cost per phone by $200. The employees produce 3 phones per month or what?
