I recently installed this on my phone. Yesterday, I sat in my car and played some music. Shazam did not recognise a single song.

Among the ones I played:

Material Girl - Madonna
You're The Voice - John Farnham
Theme from "For A Few Dollars More" - Sergio Leone
Theme song from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Bollywood movie)
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
Heart - Pet Shop Boys
We Will Rock You - Queen

Program is overrated, maybe? Or only works for certain types of music?

Songs played were ripped from original CD album at 320K.

Am I doing something wrong? I know how popular this software is, and it has to be so for a reason.

I've always found Shazam to be excellent. Even when it comes to whistling a tune. Maybe you're not holding the mic towards the speakers.
Give SoundHound a try. That one is pretty good too.

Shazam should always work for tracks that have seen at least some kind of public release. If it's not working for those then something is wrong.

I've never used the app, but I used to use the 2580 service and it worked every time. Maybe you had a bad network connection.

sounds like something is wrong on your side. Maybe there was too much background noise. Shazam seldom fails me, even on less popular kinds of music

Same, Shazam is the best, it detects all the songs I need to be detected.

Kudos to Steve Jobs. I was holding it wrong.
Turned the phone to face the music, worked like a charm.

I've never seen Shazam get a song wrong yet! Think something bugged out on your end, ive even tried the most obscure songs I can think of!
Its awesome when you're in a store or something and hear a song you like and don't know the name. Also as someone else said, check out SoundHound its pretty good too.
