Plex has released a native Windows 8 / Windows RT Client for Plex Media Server

I was able to test it initially by logging into my plexpass and connecting to my media server at home remotely, worked well and immediately transcoded the videos appropriately for my mostly limited upstream bandwidth.

?2.19?

XBMC is free, apart from the streaming (which also can easily be done for free) does this offer anything over XBMC to make it a worthwhile purchase?

It can be done for free of course, but not in the painless and seamless way Plex accomplishes it. I wouldn't begrudge them ?2.19 for a tablet app which allows me to watch my movie/tv library from wherever I am. I paid about that for the ipad/iphone apps.

The new version of the media server support http live streaming though so you can still browse your media using a web browser. Not sure if it works with IE10?

It works with IE 10.

It works with IE 10.

I just tested it and it doesn't.

I'm talking about metro IE10 not the desktop version. It appears to require either flash or HLS (http live streaming) which Metro IE10 doesn't support.

This app is the best bet for Surface RT users.

You can add your internal ip address to the IE flash allowed sites or through the registry hack to get plex flash support.. its not that hard :)

Any thoughts an opinions on this new version? It's been no secret that I'm not a fan of Windows 8, and I don't see this pushing me over, but if anything could, it would be my media center set up since my computer is plugged into my TV and used primarily for media center. Got no problems with Plex in Windows 7 but I'm a sucker for fancy new UIs (if they are any good... Windows 8, haha).

x86/64 yes... but Windows RT on ARM?

The registry tweak or editing the approved url list works fine on my Surface. The flash player plays my content and I tested it up to 720p without any lag.

With that said, happy there is a cheap app :)
