Everywhere I am reading OS X users going to Snow Leopard and avoiding Lion and Mountain Lion. It's like everyone going back to XP.

If you have a major piece of software that is only stable in Snow Leopard, then you probably stayed in Snow Leopard or went back to it. Lion was a pretty big over haul of an update that broke some software compatibility.
For instance, there is a really popular raster image editor called Pixelmator (its on the App Store now). It is on 2.x now. When it was 1.6 on Snow Leopard it brought an incredible amount of extensions to be used in the Automator App. You could do really cool stuff with your images by making automations, attaching those to smart folders and dropping images inside.
Lion broke features, and the developers never responded. Instead I think they are probably going a different route in v2. Probably because they don't want to have to do another rewrite of their scripting extensions to keep their users on the latest OS.
