Music player - What are you using?

Hey folks - was just about to go looking for Foobar, but wondered if there's any decent music players that I'd missed out on that all the kids are using these days?

I'm using Windows, dont want to use iTunes or Windows Media Player, just wondered what was 'cool and hip' these days?

I recently started using Foobar2000 again.

I think Winamp has a comflict with my audio drives, not sure.

I was using windows media player for a while but meh.

So far the only thing i hate about foobar is most of the skins are ugly. but this one isnt too bad

What is the name of the skin. I think it actually looks awesome.

I used to use Winamp. Now I use iTunes, although I listen to music more often straight from my phone. Also, I can't stand the new design of iTunes at the moment, they've moved everything around and I can't find any of the things that got me using iTunes to begin with like Genius. Maybe I'll look in to switching music players as well...

AIMP3. It's awesome. Very easy to record radio.

Aimp3 for casual listening. WMP for managing library.

How come you don't use AIMP's library? I'm not yet at the stage of comprehensive management because the moment I've got my first 640GB HDD I've downloaded A LOT of linux distros that came with free music. Right now I just delete songs I don't like that happen to pop up on shuffle, but I do plan for something more organised eventually.

I mostly use iTune, mostly.

Not that i love it or think it is an awesome media player but i manage my iPod library with it and the other players i tested were not better enough to bother using them instead of iTune. Tried WMP. It's great. But to manage my library it's not better than iTune. Very often it can't properly find info for an album i ripped from a CD. The star system is ok but for a strange reason sometime you listen to a song once and it automatically gets to 4 stars and you listen to another song countless of times and it stays to 3 stars. I really like foobar but the ui is really ugly i'll try the skin posted earlier it looks great. But i'll probably just keep using iTune. It's not just good, it's good enough.

I use Aimp2. I tried aimp3 around the later betas of it and instantly went back to 2 when i discovered that the media library seemed to have been made independent from the actual player. Haven't bothered trying it since to see if they fixed their incredibly retarded choice.

iTunes. Mainly because i had an iPhone and didn't see the point of having two dedicated audio players and the iTunes library is pretty good.

Now i have no iPhone but really don't see the point of changing. I've got it just as i like it.

Before that i used a heavily customised Foobar2000.

Yeah this is the biggest thing i hate about foobar. Why can't it just display my library without me having to search for stuff, or create a playlist.

I wish i understood their logic behind making it so complicated like this.

I really miss winamp :( used it since 1998, but im really thinking its causing my audio drivers to crash some how. If my audio keeps crashing (happens randomly so its hard to pindown the reason), then i'll know its not winamp and go back to using it. Miss it.

Under the hood foobar does have fully functional media library/library watching functionality, its just that the default UI is simple and playlist centered. Its really not hard to setup foobar to have a more media library centered approach. here is my foobar layout, I'm only using 4 components and the default UI, took like 5 mins to setup using live editing :):

Components: Facets, quicksearch, simplaylist, simplaylist manager

The left sidebar lets me search my media library, and anything I select on the left sidebar automatically populates the playlist, no need for me to create playlists or anything (although you can if you want to of course, the transcode and burn playlists are ones I made). I have the quicksearch added above the playlist so I can inline search just the active playlist if I want. I can upload the layout and needed components when I get home from work.

But if you want to auto shuffle all sounds in you library, you still have to select all and hit send to playlist right?

It's not hard, but still more steps than all the other players.

I like winamp and wmp because the library is fluid, and auto detects and adds new songs, and such, so you really just have to load up the player and hit play.

Can't stand itunes, but the last time i used it you had to manually add tracks.

If you look at the top right of that screenshot where it says "Order", is where I can change the current playback order to whatever I want (random, shuffle, default etc...) You just gotta add it to the toolbar.

To shuffle all tracks I simply click "All artists" on the left sidebar which automatically populates the main playlist with all of my music library, and change playlist order to shuffle on the top right. Its just a matter of using the right components/layout. The default layout is playlist-centric, but the facets component that I use is media library centric (and the simplaylist component is by the same author so they work well together)

I have to admit when I used Windows I was a big fan of foobar. The fact I could customise the pants out of it appealed to me the best. However if you wanted to have just a lightweight player it is easy to set up, they have even included a basic wizard these days which help novice users a great deal.

I just wish they would port foobar to Ubuntu/Mint, I know deadbeef is similar it's just not as flexible for me.

Looking for one app that can do all three at the same time, that's my dream media player

Clementine can do spotify and google drive (not sure if thats the same as google music?). It also does others such as grooveshark, lastm.fm etc.., but you do need premium accounts to stream music from spotify, grooveshark, and last.fm afiak.

Nope, Google Music allows you to upload some 20,000 MP3s or something like that and plays them and created playlists of them within a browser. There are also some third party iPhone/Pod/Pad apps that interface with GMusic too. I haven't found a Windows player that will capture GMusic yet.

according to this bug report the reason its not implemented is there is no official api yet:

probably why no other players have it yet either.
