Howdy all,

The poll is pretty self explanatory. We all (ok, not "all") go ahead and "like" (i.e. use the "like" button) a post that another member has made. The question I'm trying to figure out is this: if you look back at the times that you have used the "like" button, what are you trying to say to the poster?

Obviously the options above don't cover every aspect, so perhaps I should expect more people to vote for "other" more than the rest of the options. However, if you think about it, when are you most likely to use the "like" button out of the options above. I would prefer that "other" only be used if one of the other options doesn't cover your general usage of the "like" button.

For myself, I tend to use it because I agree with someone, but may have something to add later. Of course, there will be different reasons for me using it, but that I think would be the main reason.

Apologies if this has already been asked, but I am intrigued to hear the results.

I do it when I agree with something someone said. I don't always reply to that post, but I sometimes do.

Usually because I either like or agree with the poster.
Also stops me boosting my count replying with ^this or whatever else.

P.S is missing from tag. unofficial Thought it said 'official' initially.

Same for me, sometimes somebody just has a really smart reply that I like, other times I want to chip in so I like the post and quote it in my reply

I do it when I feel a member has answered a question logically and correctly in terms of solving the problem. I also "like" a post that makes me laugh.

I couldn't think of one item in the poll so I voted other, basically I like posts that are covered by the first 2 choices and the I just like the member choice

Voted for option #1, it's the most common to me. #2 and #3 happens, but I rarely add anything of worth.
I resist liking a post if I recall the member in question having posted something that I totally didn't like - making it sort of, but not quite, a (nonexistant) dislike button not pressed.

Also, it's often not so much "I agree" (because I try to steer clear from opinion and discussion threads) than "I think this contributes a great deal to the thread/community". And sometimes it's just plain "LOOOL".

Voted for Option 1 - Better than just quoting and putting +1 at the end.


Having said that now I have to really work to up my post count!

Usually I like posts when they offer an astute observation or are particularly funny and I'll often respond to such posts as well. Typically I only give likes to members that I respect but if it's a really good point I'll like it regardless.

I like when the post has an interesting point of view, when it's helpful or made me laugh.

I don't think it is right to like a post only because you agree with someone... This is not always useful nor helps to create a community with different points of view: it creates 'clubs' where people always think the same way, crushing the ones who are different. It's useless.

Agreed, and I'm glad to see that that particular option doesn't have any votes yet!
