New Year's Resolutions?

Recommended Posts

OK. People make them, then within January, we break them. But it's nice to pretend we are actualy going to change, right? :p

Seriously. My resolution is to quit smoking...again. I gave up for 12 months, but then, like an idiot, I took it back up about 8 months ago. Giving up isn't something I am just randomly going to attempt. I have been cutting down on my smoking for about a month, and I am pretty confident I can quit and avoid the traps which tripped me up before. (If there are an ex-smokers reading this, any advice would be welcome :) )

I also want to do more exercise. Exercise will be a positive distraction from smoking in the first few weeks of quitting, and also help me lose a few of those kilos I put on over the Xmas break :p

Does anyone have any else have resolutions they'd like to share?

Good luck, I wish the best for you and I hope you can quit smoking for sure! :) Anyway, my resolutions for the new year are to start exercising more and watching what I eat. I'm always carefree when it comes to food--if I like it, I'll eat it. I have a high metabolism, so I don't really have to worry too much about my weight, and I'm pretty thin as it is. But it's always important to eat healthy, I wouldn't want to end up having diabetes or anything in a couple of years.

Last year I vowed to read more than i had ever read in any year prior. So I managed to read just over 600 books in 2012, for 2013 I want to learn 2 programming languages (Java, and Python)

Get my CCNA.

I assume that is Cisco Certified Network Associate? I had to google it. Cool. Hope you can obtain that.

600. Wow. Fiction? Non- Fiction? I'd like to do a little more reading too.

Do you already have programming experience? Why did you choose those languages?

My New Years Resolution: No more shots, and less hard liquor (I'll still be partial to the occasional Vodka Tonic). Also, exercise. I want to work out my upper body a bit more. I'm pretty sure there was a third one (we were having this discussion in the pub last night) but it's escaped me for the moment.

600 books wow. but as for languages that's where Im at too. I started C++ and C# this year but a lot of distractions maybe ill finish learning them and maybe get my Microsoft professional developer certification for C#.

Eat healthier. Try and be more relaxed and less tense, and not give in/forgive peoples decisions that I don't agree with. Basically just be overall stronger and stand my ground a lot more on issues/decisions that I don't agree with.

1 non-fiction (steve jobs biography) the rest were Fantasy, and Science fiction. My wife and I both have a Nook and we read throughout the day we have always both been big readers, and both have several friends that are published authors.

I do have a lot of programming knowledge, I mostly program in PHP these days, I chose Java so that I could do more Android Programming, and Python because i can make more rich web apps with it.

Find myself a steady job.

Get my drivers license back after paying off $1200-$1400 in fines.

Stop dating fat girls with kids and find myself a mature, petite lady.

Eat healthier.

Done with alcohol and smoking weed, just isn't for me.

That's about it I guess for now.

I'm on you with this one.

Yes. Generally the start path to one of the highest paying IT jobs. After, Ill probably stop but if I get in the mood Ill go to the switching and routing CCNP and Ill probably stop there. CCIE is basically being god and I have no interest in that; I just want to get paid.

So, Neowin what's your new year's resolution?

Mine:

1. Work on my video game pile of shame.

2. Replace the 2 80mm fans in my secondary for 120's and 140's. (I know...)

3. Work out more and try to eat healthier.

4. Get a higher paying job that isn't dead end and fits my schedule.

5. Get my certs. (No Idea where to start, but i'd like to get my CompTIA and MCITP. Already aced my IC3 but that's easy stuff.)

    • Not even an OLED display on the laptops. Also it seems that the laptop design isn't the same as the Surface Ultra model. Looks like bargain bin at high prices.
    • VirtualBox 7.2.10 by Razvan Serea VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, 7, 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x and 6.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, OpenBSD, NetBSD and FreeBSD. Some of the features of VirtualBox are: Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don't have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox. Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers. • OK, now ask yourself how are they going to enforce that law? By requiring every single adult to prove their age and provide their legal identity documents to an UNREGULATED 3rd party company that already has a long track record of multiple data breaches. Not to mention, parliament have voted AGAINST this ban, twice, and Starmer is going ahead anyway. So, where's the democracy here, because that looks like dictatorship to me. The solution here is parental responsibility, not government control. Run some public service announcements on TV and UK social media teaching parents how to setup parental controls. That's already been proven to actually work. But the, this is not and has NEVER been about keeping kids safe. It's about control and monitoring. Watching what you're doing online and controlling what you can see and what you can say.
    • Interesting read. I knew the adware was quite controversial at the time, however never realised to the point The Guardian wrote an article about Patchou. I just said no and enjoyed his creation, I’d probably be a lot more wary of something like that today though.
