I use MSE as it is actually very good... and sometimes I scan my PC using MalwareBytes pro, but it has never found anything yet with MSE on.

Used to swear by MSE but now it just sucks...Microsoft refuses to add lots to its definitions. Avast I love. Bitdefender free is good also.

I remember one of Avast or Avira used to do pop-ups to tell you to upgrade. Which one is it again?

FWIW, I think tests are better than personal anecdotes. With that, I'm using the free version of Bitdefender (for Win 7), following these results:

For the firewall, the free version of Windows Firewall Control, and anything else installed and run for offline scanning.

Avast. It's probably one of the few downsides, they do want you to upgrade. They need to make money somehow...

free and integrated into Windows, if you have windows 8 you already have it though.

What about those who are not using Windows 8.

For me its Avast

As the form name stand for something new (like neo) I recommend Protegent Antivirus which is a very new product in Antivirus market and I have been using it since 6 month with no issue..

So I vote for Protegent Antivirus

I've used Avast and Avira for a long time but recently switched to Bitdefender.

Bitdefender is the first AV I've EVER used that can actually quarantine and/or remove a freaking infection upon detection!

I've often thought about just how effective these things really are when most of them can't do a dang thing with an infection other than warn you about them. You usually need some other program to actually remove it!

Some of those AV programs listed on the poll are absolute junk though, such as ClamWin and AVG, to mention a couple and I can't stand the way MSE updates, even if it is a good product!

Does bitdefender still break some Windows 8 installs?

The only solution when I last tried (2 months ago) was to switch to the paid version.

I don't find pay for AV models to be ethical, to be honest.  Subscription based, full of bloat, overly expensive.
