Video Playback

Recommended Posts

I am having issues playing some videos on Ubuntu 12.04.

The ones that have problem (small percentage) are laggy, sorta skips, sorta slows down.

I am using VLC as my main player, but tried the video on SMplayer as well and it's the same thing.

Anyway to know if it's the video file itself, or just the players/codecs are having problems?

I assume you're using the proprietary video drivers for your video card. If not, install them.

I am assuming you're using an Nvidia video card to watch movies with. Try installing the 'libvdpau1' package to enable hardware decoding.

Check to if Frame Skipping is enabled in your movie player. If it is, turn it off and try again.

If none of the above applies or doesn't work, then I'm sorry. I haven't used Linux in a while!

Yea none of that applies, I am using proprietary drivers, but for AMD.

I will keep checking this thread but for now I switched the file for another. Doesn't explain if it was the file or not, but gets over the problem.

There was a bug in 12.04's GStreamer libs that affected playing mp4 files (not sure if that would also affect VLC or SMPlayer, but it did break playback of mp4 files on Totem, and Youtube videos on Minitube and Musictube).

The workaround (just in case that happened to be your problem) was renaming a library so it doesn't get used:

On Ubuntu 32bit:

sudo mv /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so.bak

On Ubuntu 64bit:

sudo mv /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so.bak

Yea none of that applies, I am using proprietary drivers, but for AMD.

Using AMD Property Drivers, No prp[lem with any video format, even with my Canon Digital cam

    • Brave Browser 1.91.178 by Razvan Serea Brave Browser is a lightning-fast, secure web browser that stands out from the competition with its focus on privacy, security, and speed. With features like HTTPS Everywhere and built-in tracker blocking, Brave keeps your online activities safe from prying eyes. Brave is one of the safest browsers on the market today. It blocks third-party data storage. It protects from browser fingerprinting. And it does all this by default. Speed - Brave is built on Chromium, the same technology that powers Google Chrome, and is optimized for speed, providing a fast and responsive browsing experience. Brave Browser also features Brave Rewards, a system that rewards users with Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) for viewing opt-in ads. This innovative system provides an alternative revenue model for content creators and a way to support the Brave community. SlimBrave Neo takes all the good things about Brave and makes them even better by keeping everything clean, light, and privacy-focused. It removes the extra clutter, turns off features you might not need, and cuts down on anything that could slow you down or collect unnecessary data. Because it relies on simple settings and policies instead of modifying the browser itself, you still get full Brave compatibility—just in a smoother, lighter, and more privacy-friendly package. Brave Browser 1.91.178 changelog: Fixed certain extensions not working as expected. (#56271) Fixed inability to use Brave Sync in certain cases. (#55203) Upgraded Chromium to 149.0.7827.196. • Yeah, I signed out of everything when I changed the password to my account. I keep checking device history and there's never anything new other than my own activity.
    • Microsoft are already committed to making patches for Win10 due to the IoT edition, so they may as well continue to sell access as they were doing the work anyway
    • Oh goodie! We can look forward to more videos of people with these huge bombs catching on fire, exploding etc. There is a reason why most countries restrict the size of LiOn batteries, especially in air travel.
