I've got my ISP supplied D-link DIR-615 (D) at the moment which is working ok however it doesn't support forwarding to a broadcast address (needed for WOL/WOW over the internet) and can't be upgraded(?) to use a dd-wrt firmware unfortunately.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a good wireless router that supports forwarding to a broadcast address? I don't need more than 4 ethernet ports.

Also as 802.11ac is being finalised this year is there any routers out there now worth upgrading to?

Many thanks.

You could also buy dumb switch and try to find a different firmware for it, Or you could buy an EOL managed one. By the same logic you could buy a dumb router and try to find a different firmware for it, Or you could buy an EOL managed one.

Cisco gear will wipe the floor with consumer crap custom firmware or no custom firmware any day of the week and their first gen 802.11N gear has already reached EOL and can be found for under 200 euro online.

"that supports forwarding to a broadcast address"

Good luck with that.. But what you do is use a router that supports static arp, and then then just assign and unused IP the broadcast mac FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF

Then just forward to that IP. Another work around is just to vpn to your router and then send your WOL from the router or whatever vpn box you have up that is on 24/7/365 you can access on your lan.

if you want something with dd-wrt but without the hassle, check out Buffalo Routers. they're good routers and they come with dd-wrt on them

and as far as ac goes, i don't know of anything that's in a reasonable price range as of yet personally

Good idea. I was thinking of these options as well but was also thinking I may as well upgrade the wireless router seeing as 802.11ac is coming out soon ... seems the market isn't fully of pre cert routers unlike before 802.11n was released.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I'll have a look into them.

    • OK so SearXNG is a meta search engine that you can install locally or use via a public instance. It scrapes other search engines which you choose and then sorts the results. Not as complicated as multiple relays
    • The only difference here is that you think you came up with these reasons. You didn't. These age old fearmongering lies (that were NEVER true) were funded by and the anger stoked by Putin through proxies like Farage (and later in the USA, Trump) and filtered down through the skinheads, Neonazis, etc. until it reached the uninformed, ignorant, and gullible -- never realizing they were being played for fools against their own best interests. Even now, despite all of the EVIDENCE proving that Brexit was a terrible mistake for ALL citizens of the UK and that its supporters were tricked by Putin's proxies into sabotaging their own nation, you're still here defending these well-known lies as if they were ever true. Not only are they not true. They NEVER were. So, when are you going to realize that you were lied to and actually get angry at the liars and charlatans who lied to you, instead of blaming the innocent people they lied to you about?

    • Ooooh! Two editorial from Paul Hill on the same day! Is it my birthday or something? 😉 Okay, let's see if I get it right. SearXNG develops a meta-search engine app. Individuals install it on their relays. Users connect to these relays to have their own identity-stripping meta-search engine instead of relying on DuckDuckGo. And some of these volunteers have listed their SearXNG instances on SearX.space. That was a lot of wrap my head around. I hope I haven't missed anything.
