Fedora 18 screwed pc (HELP!)

Question

So I never use any linix distros because I really don't like unix but a friend of mine asked me to download a copy of Fedora 18 and put the live cd version on a USB key.

I copied it using a program Unet something as I found on youtube. After rebooting to try it out my motherboard won't post anymore

P8P67 PRO

I've rebooted, shut down, reset the jumpers

Now I'm a bit ****ed how this happened?

So now a nice bright RED light is on the motherboard so something died kinda great it was working amazing up till I tried this POS.

Well seems like its the boot device LED that went off.

Known issue on the p8p67 PRO motherboards from what I read.

Unplug the computer from the power outlet and reset the BIOS either by using a jumper (look in you mobo's manual) or removing the battery for a few secons. Also try to power on the computer without the USB drive you prepared with Fedora.

If it posts and you can access the BIOS, see if ASUS has an update for it and update it.

yeah defo not the fault of the download or Unetbootin, unless you told it to overwrite and install the image on the hard drive instead of the usb, i suppose that could stop your boot

Seems someone else had the issue too over here: http://forums.overcl....php?p=14923555

What graphics card do you have?

(Once working again) I recommend using this instead (for making bootable Linux USB disks): http://www.pendrivel...-easy-as-1-2-3/ I have been for over a year, and it's brilliant. Also, try KNOPPIX (http://distrowatch.c...ibution=knoppix - preferably the DVD version) instead of Fedora. Using KNOPPIX is one of the best ways to start learning about/play around with Linux, because all the software is already there installed and configured for you.

Least he can get things going, me its dead in the water.

The device light is on I did pretty much everything to resolve it but its dead.

Gonna have to RMA and never touch linux again lol

Really ****ed off through didn't need this (so much work to do)

Anyways, new topic, recommend me a new motherboard that works with my specs other then Asus.

I always go with Asus boards and need a change. Price isn't an issue.

More of an underlying hardware issue - the software is a red herring.

I had to look up "red herring" on Urban Dictionary to understand what you meant: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=red%20herring

Searching for "P8P67 pro recall" in Google comes up with info about a motherboard recall. Not good.

Here's more reading you can do about people having similar issues:

My board was one of the ones that they fixed with the B3 stepping

so not exactly the same issue as those but thanks.

The board is going to have to be RMA'ed just really ticked off that it went like that since it was fine until I tried to put linux on a thumb drive.

Still looking for suggestions on another motherboard that will be good for what I already have.

So far i'm looking at MSI Z77A-GD55 and the GD65 series.

once again, it definitely wasn't linux or the unetbootin that caused the issue. just some really coincidental timing

but either way, it sucks and I hope your new mobo works out :)

Lol @ blaming linux.

Anyways, my PC was doing this a couple nights ago. Wouldn't post and sat with a red light on. I unplugged it and cleaned the crap out of it (lots of dust). I re-applied some thermal paste as I figured it might of been heat problems. I put it all back together, and it took a bit for it to post the first time, however now it is running butter smooth, and am seeing quite the preformance increase just from the actions I took to clean it and cool it.

I got a new motherboard and it did the samething turns out the SSD I have died. Fun fun, took the motherboard with it, it seems.

Yeah in my case everything is new, I always clean it every 2-3 weeks for dust so its spotless.

It was just an ill timed death of my SSD but I'm still scared to try my USB boot device, not in the mood to kill another pc.

Maybe I'll try it on my work laptop lol

    • The Trump administration doesn't want you to use OpenAI's GPT-5.6 without its approval by David Uzondu Image via @realDonalTrump (X) As OpenAI prepares the release of its next model, GPT 5.6, the White House has instructed the company to limit the distribution of the software to a small group of government-approved partners instead of the general public, as it has done with previous releases. According to The Information, OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman sent an internal memo to staff on Thursday explaining that the federal government will approve access "customer by customer" during an initial preview phase. Altman noted in the communication that this restrictive rollout is "not [their] long-term model" for software deployment, and the company plans to work toward a "more sustainable" distribution method later. CNN said that both OpenAI and the Trump administration view the capabilities of GPT 5.6 on the same level as Anthropic's Mythos and that government officials intend to "collaborate with frontier AI labs to develop shared approaches for addressing the challenges of scaling this technology." The latest restriction comes just weeks after the US Commerce Department decided to restrict Fable, a version of Mythos with extra safety "guardrails" to prevent users from exploiting software vulnerabilities. Not long after the release, though, researchers at Amazon found a way to bypass these restrictions, prompting an aggressive response from federal authorities. The government ordered Anthropic to cut off access for non-US citizens located outside the US, non-US citizens living inside the US, and incredibly, even Anthropic's own foreign-born employees. Anthropic now appears to be building a workaround to resolve this compliance block with an update to its Privacy Policy that introduces a category called "Verification Data" to handle KYC and Digital IDs. This setup could mandate digital identity checks to filter users by nationality, requiring a government-issued ID and facial biometric data. Who knows? Maybe in the future, you would have to scan your US Passport or State ID to prove your citizenship before you are allowed to chat with Fable 5 (or any other model).
    • When Windows 7 was released I created an AutoHotkey script that uses Alt+` as a keyboard shortcut to move a window across monitors. I have been using that script for over 15 years and this is the first time I have come across another app that uses the same shortcut!
    • I called it last year that they wouldn't end support when they said there would. There are too many people still on Windows 10 waiting for something better to upgrade to and 11 ain't it! The recent promises of fixing Windows 11's many problems is nice, but unless they deliver on those promises in a big way then I expect customers will still want to stick with 10.
    • Full ACK. I went too far adressing your post specifically. And as you said, it up to us customers as participant of the market dynamic as it happens to decide whether we spend our money on a product or not. The responsibility is to the company. In case of this price hike one could assume that MS is expecting or even starting to see a new interest in XBox hardware so they want to avoid losses per unit sold. I find it fair enough that they granted a period in which everyone interested could grab a unit for the current price (Amazon.de has a reliable stock of XBox Series X digital, which I bought last December after having sold my day one Series X a year ago). It is not that they cash up their customers starting on Monday. Cheers and let's cling to our perfectly fine hardware as long as we deem it worthy in relation to purchasing something new!
