sublime text 2 is really the best ive found, and ive tried them all.

Check out jeffery way's tutorial on all the good plugins, it makes sublime much better.

Icouldn't use it without my favourite plugins now.

Try dreamweaver, not the WYSIWG part but just the code editor, its actually not to bad for the newer versions. I don't like it mind you, but its better than most.

I use Netbeans.

I really like it.

It is free.

Integrates well with PHP, HTML, CSS ( as well as many other languages)

SVN support

Database support

Framework support. It has heavy integration with Zend.

Only downside is it requires Java, which isn't a truly bad thing, just disable it for browsers.

Well you can do Java, .NET or native.

For .NET and native you can get started with Visual Studio 2012 Express: http://www.microsoft...o/eng/downloads

Or Notepad++

I second this, I have Visual Studio 2012 Pro but http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/eng/products/visual-studio-express-for-web would be best for OP based on what he wants to create. I also use the Modern UI app Code Writer on Surface though as desktop apps don't run on Windows RT.

The OP didn't specify explicitly specify web development hence the generic link :D

I wouldn't do software development on a tablet.

To Quote the OP:

"I am sorry I should have been more specific. This would be for HTML, JS, PHP, CSS work flows. Is visual studio a good product for that stuff?"

I only use Code Writer to make changes when I'm out, my desktop is for the real work such as compiling. Web development on Surface isn't an issue though as long as it's just HTML.

Personally, I haven't found another IDE that is as polished or nice to use as Visual Studio. VS2012 even more so. It's the best out of any option in my opinion, and it's free.

Though a close second is WebStorm by JetBrains. (the same people who make Resharper) WebStorm shares most, if not all, of the same functionality for web technologies that Resharper adds to C#. But the down side is it's not free.

I moved to the PC (Windows 8) from a Mac recently. I used coda quite often. Is there anything like coda for a PC? What dev tools would you recommend for a PC? I bought sublimetext 2 but not feeling the love there yet.

Thanks

You may find this useful in your development on Sublime. :)

Thank you very much for all the suggestions. I tried Visual Studio 2012 express for web. It seems to just be for .Net stuff. I like Sublime quite a bit. I guess I got way used to Coda. Thank you very much for the PHP link. http://www.xcjs.com/2012/01/02/adding-a-php-build-system-to-sublime-text-2/

That will work nicely.

    • Since they open sourced the calculator in Win 10/11 it is much better and can do a lot, I love it.
    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
    • Because of the EU (a good thing) newer android devices been getting 5 years worth of security patches. Except some Motorola which found the loop hole, and offer ZERO updates. In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.
