Here?s the description from Mead?s first book in the Vampire Academy series (via Amazon):

St. Vladimir?s Academy isn?t just any boarding school?it?s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They?ve been on the run, but now they?re being dragged back to St. Vladimir?s?the very place where they?re most in danger. . . .

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy?s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi?the world?s fiercest and most dangerous vampires?make Lissa one of them forever.

Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters Snags The Weinstein Company For Distribution

Though mostly known for producing movies with adult themes, most recently showcased in films such as Silver Linings Playbook and Inglourious Basterds, the Weinstein Company is adding some young adult fare into its upcoming slate of productions. Not only that, but it?s got vampires in it. It seems like a predictable more, sure, but teen vampire fiction is also a well-established and highly successful sub-sub-genre of films to invest in.

Deadline reports the Weinsteins? latest distribution project is the recently-announced Blood Sisters, the first film adaptation from the best-selling Vampire Academy franchise by author Richelle Mead. Blood Sisters is the first in a series of six books, and has a spinoff series, Bloodlines, which will contain six novels when it?s finished its publishing run. Should this be a profitable venture, expect to see a lot more from Mead?s series in theaters in years to come.

A lot of that success will be riding on director Mark Waters, who first broke into directing with the delightfully dark and incestuous The House of Yes before moving into more conventional and youth-guided fare such as Freaky Friday, The Spiderwick Chronicles and Mr. Popper?s Penguins. He?s perhaps most notable for Mean Girls and 500 Days of Summer, and was most recently attached to a film reboot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. It?s almost shocking there weren?t rumors of a zombie film as well, just to round things out.

For Blood Sisters, Zoey Deutch (Beautiful Creatures, Ringer) will star as Rose Hathaway, a half-human, half-vampire student of St. Vladimir?s Academy, where young vampires are taught how to properly use their powers. Rose is tasked with protecting her vampire princess best friend Lissa, played by up-and-comer Lucy Fry, best known for her work on the Australian family drama Lightning Point. Rose also finds herself in a secret romance with instructor Dimitri (Danila Kozlovski). Lest it sounds too much like a high school drama, the evil badass immortal race, the Strigoi, are a constant threat to the young vamps and half-vamps of St. Vladimir?s.

The film was scripted by Mark?s brother Daniel Waters, well-known for having penned Heathers and Batman Returns, as well as having co-scripted Hudson Hawk and the classic Andrew Dice Clay flop The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. Filming on Blood Sisters Is set to begin this summer.
