Sky Atlantic has announced the cast for new crime drama The Tunnel.

Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones) and Cl?mence Po?sy (Birdsong) will lead the ten-part series, based on the format of The Bridge.

Adapted by an Anglo-French writing team led by Ben Richards (Spooks, Outcasts) and directed by Dominik Moll (The Monk), The Tunnel will begin filming this month and is due to air later this year.

The official synopsis reads: "When a prominent French politician is found dead on the border between the UK and France, detectives Karl Roebuck (Dillane) and Elise Wassermann (Po?sy) are sent to investigate on behalf of their respective countries. However, the case takes a surreal turn when a shocking discovery is made at the crime scene, forcing the French and British police into an uneasy partnership. As the serial killer uses ever more elaborate and ingenious methods to highlight the moral bankruptcy of modern society, Karl and Elise are drawn deeper into his increasingly personal agenda."

Other cast members will include: Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones) as social worker, Stephen Beaumont; Tom Bateman (Da Vinci?s Demons) as journalist, Danny Hillier; Tobi Bakare (Silent Witness) as Chuks Akinade; Jeanne Balibar (All About Actresses) as Charlotte Joubert; Thibault de Montalembert (Days of Glory) as the Head of the Calais police; Mathieu Carri?rre as Charlotte?s husband, Alain; and Angel Coulby (Merlin) and Jack Lowden (Mrs Biggs) as Karl?s wife and son, Laura and Adam Roebuck.

Episode 2 will see Keeley Hawes (Ashes to Ashes) join as Suze Harcourt, a drug-addicted care worker to Harriet, played by Liz Smith (The Royle Family).

I'm surprised that this is a Sky production as I thought the BBC were going to remake it.

The Bridge was fantastic and it would be a shame if the remake was second-rate. However, if done well and sensitively it would be good to have a show that reflects on the animosity between the English and the French (especially from the English) and demonstrates how ridiculous it is.
