Bookmarks question ...

Question

I haven't noticed any thread like this before, so I thought I'd ask.

Is there a software program or add-on that will combine bookmarks, eliminate duplicates, and put bookmarks in the order you choose ... ?

I'm mainly talking about Firefox.

Thanks for any insight. :)

Not sure I know what you mean by "combine" - merge lists? And from what sources / what format(s). Both from Fx or one list from another browser? Need more info before answer that. Merging 2 Fx lists is fairly easy.

"Put in order"... what type of ordering do you mean? Just ascending / descending alpha, or other types? Auto-Sort Bookmarks has simple sorting options. Another that had more options (but not sure is still offered) was Sort Places.

There are a few addons that say they find duplicates, but don't know how well they work. BE SURE to export your bookmarks to another HDD or external device.

If you export bookmark lists in html format, could use file comparison programs - like WinMerge - that will find where files are identical or different - line by line. Little bit of learning curve, but not too bad.

One issue is, in bookmarks you may sometimes WANT a bookmark under more than one folder / category. That's where I'm not sure how well some duplicate finders work

FF uses the .json file format.

In the past, importing old .json files results in numerous dups.

Highly annoying.

It also appears that my bookmarks are stuffed in 2 or 3 folders.

Thanks for your input.

This looks like it might be good:

you have option to export in BOTH json & html format, which I do on a regular basis. "Backup" stores it in json; then there's an option to export in html.

If for instance, you want to pick & choose certain folders or bookmarks from a BU & add to current list, you can open an html list in any app capable of reading it (preferably w/ editing ability, like Notepad++). Edit / Save what you want, then import or combine those w/ another list. I'm not sure how good Fx is at importing / combining PARTIAL lists, or exactly how it handles importing an html list into the currently used bookmark set.

If when you select import (from html), it only winds up adding bookmarks from the imported list, that AREN'T already in the in-use list. I'm sure there's a KB on it.

But, as I said, you could compare 2 html lists w/ something like WinMerge & have several options on how to combine them, or just find differences in the files. Showing you line by line, where the differences are.

Here's a KB on importing from numerous sources & in different formats. http://kb.mozillazin...mport_bookmarks I'd BU current bookmarks, then play w/ importing some - from HTML. My impression is it adds list B to list A. I'm not sure it creates dups.

"Restore" (from json) COMPLETELY replaces the current list w/ the BU json copy about to be restored.

I'd ask for suggestions on Mozillazine Forums, & state exactly what your needs are.

    • Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2 to finally get one of the most requested features by Sayan Sen This past week Microsoft officially confirmed Windows 11 version 26H2 with the latest build, 26300.8697, for testing in the experimental Insider channel. The company also published more details about it mainly directed towards IT admins and system admins. Essentially version 26H2 will be delivered via an enablement package (eKB) over Windows 11 25H2. If you are wondering about some of the upcoming features in the next Windows version, one of them is certainly very interesting as Microsoft has confirmed it is finally bringing one of the most overwhelmingly requested features ever. March Rogers, the Partner Director of Design at Microsoft, recently highlighted some of the Search improvements that the company is testing, and during the interaction with users on X where he posted it, Rogers also confirmed that the company is working on disabling web search results inside Search. This is something which many users find quite annoying as Windows would often serve them links to Bing which it feels could be more helpful rather than bringing up the actual object or app the user may be searching for on their PC. Finally though the company is prioritizing local file search over the web. However the feature could not be disabled for many users as not all new features are immediately rolled out to everyone. Image via phantomofearth (X) Windows enthusiast phantomofearth who likes to dig deep into new builds uncovered the IDs you will need to enable these features. Using the following feature IDs the new Search-related features landing in Windows 11 26H2 can be used. Follow the steps below to enable the new Search experience on Windows 11 build 26300.8697: Download ViveTool from GitHub and unpack the files in a convenient and easy-to-find folder. Press Win + X and select Terminal (Admin). Switch Windows Terminal to the Command Prompt profile with the Ctrl + Shift + 2 shortcut or by clicking the arrow-down button at the top of the window. Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files with the CD command. For example, if you have placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive. Type vivetool /enable /id: and press Enter. Restart your computer. If you change your mind and want to restore, repeat the steps above and replace /enable with /disable in the commands on steps 5 and 6. Delightedly and perhaps also expectedly, once you disable web search and other such bloat, the Windows 11 Search is said to get snappier as remarked by another Windows enthusiast Xeno.
