You have a circular dependency,

[blocks B ] sys-apps/kmod ("sys-apps/kmod" is blocking sys-apps/module-init-tools-3.16-r2)

[blocks B ] sys-apps/module-init-tools ("sys-apps/module-init-tools" is blocking sys-apps/kmod-12-r1)

In line 1: kmod is blocking module-init-tools because it is built off an earlier build

In line 2: module-init-tools is blocking kmod because it was built off a later build

I would bring everything up-to-date first and then debug if the problem is persistent.

I personally always do a world update before installing X, GUI etc.

I am assuming for Virtual Box your host graphics card is just being exposed to the client? Did you already set this up?

dbus

consolekit

x-server

<graphics> <- this can be done within the x-server installation IF you add your graphics card to the make.conf BEFORE emerging x-server.

all need to be installed.

ok

see on the vm i have 1gb ram

it took about 11 hours to do a emerge X

how much quicker will it be on a normal drive with 4gb ram?

also even if i just get it to a terminal how can i add it to my grub so i can boot to it?

Ram plays a part in it for sure but how many cores did you give the VM and how many threads have you made usable to MAKE? IF you give it 1 core with 1 thread - of course this will be very painful and you will probably find the 1GB RAM is being under-utilized.

Edit

The missing piece for me is Virtual Box, I have only used it in the past to run Win XP when I did not use a dedicated Windows box. My experience comes from using VM Ware server - I am not sure how much you can tailor in the Virtual Box environment and thus if my question seems odd we can just query the proc.

# cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "processor"

processor : 0

processor : 1

This is on a Core 2 Duo

Edit 2

To save some time, post your make.conf as well.

ah i get

# cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "processor"
processor : 0
and i have a core 2 duo too

Jeeze! Fortran does not love you either lol

EDIT

Your host is Fedora core?

Run the same command on the host,

[haggis@laptop ~]$ cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "processor"

Fortran is in there as the guide said to add it in lol

also when i do
emerge --update --deep world
i get this

error.png

In VirtualBox, right-click on your Gentoo VM and go to Settings->System->Processor. From that screen you can set the number of processors you want VirtualBox to use. Also, enabling VT-x or AMD-V in your BIOS (if available) will drastically improve your VM's execution speed. VirtualBox has support for hardware acceleration enabled by default (Settings->System->Acceleration), but it won't actually be used unless your processor has support for it and its enabled in BIOS.

Must be a new issue, I am not near my Gentoo machine right now but I would try this,

1: # emerge -C module-init-tools

2: # emerge -1 kmod

The USE flag 'tools' will provide an alternative but most likely since you have added it globally but not updated the world - this has not come into effect.

Then update your world.

Xorangekiller: That is awesome - this will help Haggis for sure.

Hi Haggis,

Hope all is well - IF you follow Soul Takers advice it might throw an error as in my previous post I removed it already. 'Tools' is already within your USE list and thus when you re-build the world. Everything in theory should be good to go ... Let me know.

That solution came from the gentoo forum and bug tracker, has worked here without issue, as I say it will complain (warn you) that you are removing a system package but kmod replaces its function so as long as you have that compiled all should be good

For sure and perhaps it is not wrong as it is more or less the same steps as i recommended but I am trying to bring the system up-to-date so the compiling of the GUI goes smoothly after the fix.

Better way to phrase it: it is not that you are wrong - it is that combining my advice and yours will result in an error.

    • Yeah... The root of my comment, ostensibly, is how to spin the story via the actual technical merits of the solution! * Decentralized (aka federated) solution with built-in encrypted ephemeral message transport, * Transport via Relays (intermediary servers) with no message archival, * Second configurable pathway are actual email servers (if DNS records are programmed accordingly) via IMAP protocols carriage, * "Chat-over-Email" is the design pattern adopted; it can either leverage full-blown Email Server (must use the INBOX folder) to exchange all received messages/edits/reactions (so be weary of notifications overloads) [best practice is creating a separate email acct used explicitly for federated chat purposes!] or leverage its built-in Relay Server mechanism which actually resides on-device (by default but can be configured otherwise), * By virtue of be a decentralized/federated model, all other intermediary servers who may pass-along messages (while the recipient's final relay/device is inaccessible) cannot snoop on the messages due to the encrypted nature of contents. The intermediaries may, however, analyze the metadata due to the simple fact that routing mechanisms require hints for relay destinations. Unfortunately, whomever is posting about DeltaChat across socials are misleading with "zero metadata" claims -- especially when the Relays (according to their own technical documents) mandate the addition of chat-version metadata and other decorations in order to actually transport any message. -- Based on this summary, I'd prefer if they'd better dual-path message transport (email server add-in, federated relay engine) rather than patch-on email protocols to existing federated social media frameworks. They're frankensteining something rather than extending widely-deployed technology stacks.
    • Decentralized search result anonymization...
    • Russia invaded Crimea, so not sure what you are getting at. Are you saying that the E.U is like what the USSR was? What is wrong with wanting control over your own country? i bet Trump would not stand by and allow Canada to control the U.S.
