[CANADA] Looking for some help finding a Cell Plan

Recommended Posts

I am looking for some help finding a plan in Canada, I have been tasked with getting a cell phone for one of our users that lives in Canada, It needs the following

Must include Long Distance to the USA

Must have an iPhone

Must have at least 2GB of Data per month

I do not care if it is month to month or billed monthly.

Who would be the cheapest company to purchase this plan from?

Aiite, well when you say long distance, I assume you don't mean roaming? Then I'd recommend you use a company such as yak.ca for your long distance. Cheapest way.

All providers have iphones, and you really have to shop around for what plan you want. Do you talk alot? How many minutes would be nice for you?

Ok Here is a bit more information

This is a company phone that will need at LEAST 1000 Minutes Per Month, It will be in Canada at all times, It will be required to all within canada and make daily calls to the USA (Specifically Ohio) It will require a Data package with a Minimum of 2Gb of data per month.

It really depends on how the phone will be used. Most providers have iPhone and most have large data plans (though data can be very expensive here). The prices also range, we have company such as Wind Mobile, Koodo, fido, etc that all offer fairly inexpensive plans, but may not have what you want..

However then you get companies which cost more but are basically one of the three big names (Bell, Rogers, Telus). For example for what you want with bell:

Phone: Apple iPhone 4S (16 GB)

Monthly charges: $125.00 (3Yr Contract)

Plan:

  • Voice & Data 75
    $75.00
  • International Text ? Unlimited
    $15.00
  • Unlimited Canada-to-Canada and Canada-to-U.S. Long Distance
    $35.00

Other:

One time charges: $79.95

The Voice & Data 75 :

  • Unlimited local anytime minutes
  • 3 GB1 of data ($10 per additional GB)
  • Unlimited text, picture and video messaging2

My experience with Canada's telephone companies,

WIND: Best valve.

ROGERS: Best for inner cities (Costs the most)

BELL: Best all round for locations (In between Wind / Rogers)

Also, the above information is subject to their location.

Wind Mobile is amazing but unfortunately, the iPhone 4S won't work on their network. If it did, a lot of people would switch from the big 3 (Rogers, Bell, and Telus). I currently have Wind's $40 unlimited everything plan which includes Canada-wide and US calling (plus global text messaging). I don't think they offer it anymore though.

To the OP, I don't know if any of the big 3 offer unlimited US calling as an add-on. I know Rogers has an option to get preferred rates for $5/month (I think it's something like $0.10/minute).

I am from Alberta, back a bit ago, I found Koodos.com (a baby company of telus) and went with Canada wide unlimited plan.

Included with this plan is unlimited talk time, unlimited Canada wide long distance, unlimited world texting + 1 gig data for $60

When i signed up it was on special for $56 with a bonus of 2 gigs data.

Now this doesn't excatly fit your needs since it doesn't include USA calling, but how I get around that when i call the US, is i downloaded a free app called "MagicJack" and make all calls to the US for free from that either on wi-fi or the 3g connection.

For the $60 month-to-month price (no contract, no activation fee) its the best deal i have found. I brought my own device (iphone 4 I picked up off Kijiji for $200) to them and get an additional 10% off my monthly bill too.

Hope this helps. Here is the link if interested.

Added: wanted to say too that if needed, for $29.95 a YEAR, you can get that magic jack and actual real Ohio number so when your business associates call you, they will be calling your "local" ohio number that reaches you in Canada for free.

forgot to mention you can also use the Skype app for iphone. You can get an Ohio number and get there unlimited usage (US/Canada) plan for only $3 month.

If you wanted to get SUPER cheap, buy a used iphone 3gs ($50-$100) or 4 ($200-$300) and go wi-fi only and don't even use a carrier. You would be limited to your wifi though (or anyones wifi) but you can grab the 100% free FONGO app (previously known as Dell Voice) which is 100% free across MOST* Canada cities (and they give you a 100% free local number if available in your area) and then add on that skype package for your US calls and you would have your phone system for only $3 a month :)

    • I know I won't ever be using it to make my game. I'd rather pay humans.
    • Nah. For every indie dev that needs to create code for "stuff" or textures, it's a godsend enabler to possibly tackle a project that you may not otherwise. The end result and testing will tell the truth if everything works or doesn't, or a game is just mediocre slop, but now these tools are now there and it's the developer's duty to judge the outcome, and even more so for pro studios. And you gotta remember that they will be at an early stage.
    • whoosh my comment went over your head. Enjoy your notchless 3:2 OLED device
    • As a game dev, today was really depressing. They announced that Blueprints will be deprecated in UE6 to be fully replaced by their sh**ty Python-like Verse language... They also announced that 5.8 will be the last version of UE5 until UE6 comes out in MID 2029!!!! They have completely lost the plot.
