Can't change wallpaper/theme

I just got a new ssd, did a clean install of windows 8 pro on it, activated windows, and rebooted. Yet it still refuses to let me change the wallpaper or theme. It just totally ignores my selection, either via the control panel appearance settings or via windows explorer. how can I get this to work? This is pretty ridiculous...

And yes my windows is legit and activated:

thanks, after running windows update it worked, I should have thought of that :D You are right, it probably hadn't "checked" the activation status yet.
