Does anyone know, can Word 2013 be set to save files as .doc and not .docx by default? We need files saved in new computers to be fully compatible with computers running older versions of Word. Also, the users are not especially great at using computers and I may end up having to guide them through saving in the older format every time they want to save a file. It's going to be challenging enough to guid them through a move from Windows XP to Windows 8.

I know you can in MS Word 365, it's under preferences > save. Office '07 has the same option. I would assume '13 would as well.

Default is technically "Strict Open XML" format aka .docx.

Office 2007 muddied the water by supporting a not so strict XML format, and the "Strict" Open XML format. As long as your using Microsoft software it's no issue.

Office 2013 also supports Open Document Format version 1.2 which is the default for Open/Libre Office, Google Docs.

Unless you are using fancy formatting options, can't go wrong with saving it in RTF / Rich Text format which just about in any word processor.

There's also the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack that allows older versions of Office to open up the new format.

Go to File, Options. Select Save and there you will see a dropdown for the default file format
