Hi Everyone. This has really been bothering me, so I figured I would ask if anyone on here has any idea why someone would do this.

Here is what I am seeing. We are a service company in Northeastern PA and when you do a search online, the results on the first page are all sites for companies that "claim" to service this area (Some of their domains even mention a city up here). They even have local numbers on some of these sites...

But they're based in Florida, or California... Literally nowhere near here. They don't service this area, they don't do anything with this area.

Which completely confuses me. What is there to gain by putting a site up for an area that you don't now, nor have you ever done business in? Does anyone have any idea?? I would think this would just create a lot of nuisance calls that you don't want to be bothered with...

Thanks Again,

-Matt-

They have "field" workers. So they may be located in Florida, but have, more than likely contractors, in the area that they call when there is work in the area.

Actually a super common practice.

And just saw what section of the site this was in. It is the digital age. Everything can be done on a conference call via Skype. So unless people insist on meeting their web company in person, why not try to get clients from all over the country? Back when I did web stuff, I even had a client from California even though I lived in NJ. Just had to make sure I had unlimited minutes on my cell phone.

This is pretty common, I work with many maintenance / construction who have home base territories but advertise nationally. IF they can take the financial hit with the distance they will do the job or farm it out to a local firm for a price.

Becoming more and more popular all the time.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I really appreciate it. Out of curiosity I called a few of these companies and left vm messages for most of them. Those that I left messages for, so far have not called me back. The one I spoke to was confused as to why they would have this site and weren't sure what to do with my phone call... So I don't know if they actually want the work or not. But being in the industry up here, I know the players and have never before run into any of these companies... And I could understand trying to build a brand nationally, but if I am MLyonsConstruction.com and I am based in Pennsylvania, I think there's a difference in trying to build the brand nationally and putting up a website like SeattleConstruction.com with a Seattle number that forwards to my voice mail... It's very localized and purposeful...

That's why I'm so confused... lol
