IGN was hit with editorial layoffs today, with sites 1UP, UGO and Gamespy expected to be shut down.

"We are focusing on our two flagship brands, IGN and AskMen. Unfortunately, as a result, we have made the decision to close sites and restructure our teams accordingly," a company spokesperson confirmed to Joystiq.

The news comes less that a month after IGN was purchased by j2 Global through its Ziff Davis subsidiary.

Never cared for their sites or even IGN all that much. But that's still a shame.

this is terrible news. i love IGN, they're my go-to site for gaming news, and if their sister outlets are hit...i hope this doesn't mean anything beyond. seriously, first it's the paper publications, now SITES are going bust? what the hell?

Not surprised a bit. Ziff Davis is terrible.

Out of those sites, 1up would've been the one to keep running. The only one with a respectable name still.

I wonder how that will affect Gamespy powered games?

They sold that part of the business on a while back. Don't you remember the **** storm a few months ago when the new company started turning off the servers and demanded more money - http://games.slashdo...without-warning

Poor Matt Rorie, how will he fund his all-puppy diet now?

Polygon.com is probably going to become the best from all these!

Become the best? IMO it already is the best, but I'm not really in place to judge as Polygon is really the only place I go for game news aside from Rock, Paper, Shotgun (which is rare).

That's a shame! I've always loved IGN.

I actually missed that story. Crazy.

As for this article, I can't say I'm surprised. Gamespy has been on life-support for years and IGN isn't exactly a quality publication.

I only started following Polygon a couple of months ago, but they're definitely one of my favourites; for me, the top spot is between them and Eurogamer.
