Back when I did, absolute ghastly silence. And look how far has that got me /jk

Often I did try something - instrumental, dark ambient - but it still did rob from focus and stupid mistakes started to crop up rapidly. Of course, I've never been close to a good programmer anyway. I got carried away by magical harmonies of notes, forming melodies, instead of magical symbols forming statements etc.,... so to speak.

Yeah its individual per person.
I personally listen to all kinds, depending mainly on my current mood or musical appetite. Ranges from Horace Andy to Scooter to Jean Gabin and back to System of a Down.
And I know coders that listen to the weirdest and hardest death/grunge metal available. And some that listen to ocean sounds and other natural sounds.
