GPU Issues (Any help appreciated.)

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

GPU: ASUS nVidia GeForce GTX 660 ti OC

#

# PRELUDE TO THE ISSUE

#

I am having trouble diagnosing an issue with my GPU kernel. I was playing a game in-which a pop-up occurred with the message "You are not running the latest drivers for your nVidia 660 Ti, please perform an update before playing this game". It happened that Windows Update popped up and informed me of an update, "nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti" and so I installed it and this is when the nightmare began.

#

# THE ISSUE

#

Anytime I make anything full screen etc. the screen goes black and a message occurs "Display driver NVIDIA windows kernel mode driver, version <insert version> stopped responding and has successfully recovered"

Where <insert version> is the version number of the current drivers I am trying.

#

# ENTRY FOUND IN ADMIN LOG

#

"Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

#

# WHAT I HAVE TRIED SO FAR

#

1: I have down graded from 314 to 310

2: I have down graded from 310 to 304 (original packaged version)

3: Uninstalled everything from Program / Features - reinstalled from scratch

4: Uninstalled everything from Device manage - reinstalled from scratch

5: Combined 3 + 4 - reinstalled from scratch

# INTERESTING INFORMATION

I have ASUS GPU tweak running and while I am just posting this message I see my GPU climbing to 99% usage and the temp is jumping from 33C to 59C.

The problem has occurred 3 times since writing this post.

Unless anyone has any other suggestions,

I cannot seem to find anyone who has found a solution - I will just complete re-install the OS. Other than Windows Updates, this machine rarely is changed.

Are you only trying to use the drivers from windows update?

I would ignore those ones and just drab the latest ones from nvidia.com

Tried this - had no effect on the problem!

According to GPU Tweak, while I was away form the computer the GPU has been running at 100% Utilization - only running Fire Fox.

Have you tried uninstalling anything GPU tweaky related, any monitoring software that is not from windows or the drivers?

And check the event logs for any events around the problem times

You could try a system restore to before the problem too, and then update direct from nvidia instead of windows update

I have tried uninstalling everything, GPU Tweak was a latest addition as I noticed people describing this problem when the card was over heating. I wanted to know the temperature of the card / fan operation but this was all normal for the situation I.e. the card randomly running 100% Utilization is going to see an increase in fan speed.

This is the message I am seeing within the admin tools "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

I focused on this except 3 variants had the same issue, which suggested a hardware issue but as we talk right now - on this new version of windows 7, with the same nVidia card, the problem is not visible.

I need the data that is on this drive. I have went out and bought a Samsung Pro SSD and installed a new version of Windows 7 onto the machine. Right now the problem does not seem to be present but the Windows update is in progress. This time I blocked the nVidia update through Windows update and installed from the nVidia website.

System restore shouldn't lose any data you have downloaded/copied to the drive (ie User folders) , just installed programs and drivers and updates since the restore point

For sure, part of me just wanted an excuse to get the SSD lol

I know you have a decent PSU but I wouldn't rule out PSU problems.

It is possible but the GPU Tweaks is showing a steady voltage. What else can I check to insure this is not the case?

30 minutes has passed and still functioning. I will play a video game in a minute to test it out but I do believe I created a software issue, in-which maybe a combination of many items was the cause. I have noticed that an nVidia Update is still within the Windows Update regardless of the update from nVidia.

never install gpu drivers from windows update cus its like a basic version to make it function and could mess stuff up. always get it from the official website. same goes if your installing a separate soundcard to. not sure if theres a program to fully remove normal nvidia ones but you could have tried installing some detonator drivers then use detonator destroyer (if it still exists) to completely remove all the drivers. then start again but if its working now, fair enough

hmmm forget about detonator stuff its yeaaaarrrrssss old. guess thats how long since ive used an nvidia card

    • Dead by Daylight, Two Point Museum, and more join Xbox Free Play Days for the weekend by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe There is a brand-new Free Play Days offer available to Xbox players, giving them a chance to try out a new selection of games over the weekend. Microsoft's latest promotion brings some high-profile titles, including the sports title PGA TOUR 2K25 and the racing sim Assetto Corsa. Almost all the games being offered this time require an Xbox Game Pass subscription, with only one title being available for all players. Starting with the fully free-to-play section, Dead by Daylight is populating it solo. This asymmetric survival horror title should be the most familiar to most gamers, considering its age. The multiplayer four-versus-one asymmetric survival horror game has you assuming the roles of survivors or the killer to see who can come out on top. This Dead by Daylight offer will be available to play until Monday, June 22, giving you an extra day of play compared to the remainder of the Free Play Days titles. Meanwhile, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members can now try out the well-received tycoon game Two Point Museum, the circuit racing sim Assetto Corsa, as well as 2K's golf sim experience that gives players a career to develop alongside real-world pros and courses. Here are the announced games and the platforms they are available to play on: PGA TOUR 2K25 (Xbox Series X|S) Two Point Museum (Xbox Series X|S) Assetto Corsa (Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One) Dead by Daylight (Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One) To easily find the titles on Xbox consoles, first head to the Store, and then in the sidebar, find the Home section. In there, open the Subscriptions tab. All the games from the Free Play Days collection will show up in this section for quick access. Apart from Dead by Daylight's offer, this week's Free Play Days promotions will end on Sunday, June 21, at 11:59 pm PT.
