bad checksum error on boot?

Recommended Posts

i shutdown last night properly, but when i turned the computer on this morning, there were 2 extra beeps and i saw the "bad checksum error" message. so i went into the bios and changed some settings then it booted up fine.

is it the battery holder? i just changed the battery about 2 weeks ago.

i'm hoping this is just some random occurrence, so i won't think too much about it.

also, i see there are some settings called "load optimal settings" and "load best performance settings" and i'm wondering if these make a big difference. is "best performance" too much for the pc?

amd athlon xp 2000+ (at 1.67ghz)

ecs k7s5a pro motherboard (yeah yeah i know)

512 mb micron pc2100 ddr ram

western digital special edition 80gb 7200 rpm 8mb cache hdd

maxtor 40gb hdd

geforce4 ti4200 64mb ddr

thanks everyone. :)

I would check to make sure that the battery is seated properly in the holder. might not have a good connection. I've gotten bad checksum errors after ram upgrades, and bios flashes. Usually after exiting the bios, its all good. My friend had an old emachine that gave that error sometimes. We never figured out what the problem was with it. I'm not familiar with some of the setting in the bios, so I'm leaving your other question to someone else. If you remember what your bios setting were before, I would just set them back.

thanks for the response.

i just changed the battery 2 weeks ago, so i made sure that the connection was good, but even then, it was working fine for 2 weeks. i haven't changed any hardware or done any flashing, so that's not it. and well, i just changed the bios back to what i had before because the cmos error reset everything to default, but other than that, i haven't done anything.

any opinions on "best performance" or "optimal" settings?

hahahahahaha its the board mate.

Those boards wipe their bios from time to time.... just put all the settings in the bios back to what they were and yer gonna be fine :)

Also... id recommend a new mobo... the K7S5A's really suck. And i should know cuz i had one.
