W8: Security Certificate Errors & Windows Update

Recommended Posts

Everything was working perfectly a few hours ago, l I shut down normally and just turned on PC. I can't access any SSL sites, I always get security certificate errors and warnings about safety. Windows Update doesn't work, it says it has not been updated in 30 days - which is false since I just checked last night. My anti-virus stopped working and kept saying it was outdated, also not possible. I tried to uninstall but couldn't, so had to do it via safe mode using the ESET uninstaller tool in command prompt. Support has no info, I don't know what else to do and really really x100 don't want to have to reformat/clean install! Is this a known issue? Perhaps with ESET?

Hello,

I don't recall seeing any mentions of a widespread problem like this on ESET's support forum, but, then again, I don't visit it daily.

My initial thought is that something damaged the installation of your ESET software, either a benign software update to something else, or something malicious like an infection of Win32/Sirefef (a/k/a ZeroAccess).

I am not sure which of those it might be, but in either case, my solution would be the same: Give their support a call at +1 (866) 343-3738 and ask them to walk you through troubleshooting the reinstallation of the software. They should be open from 9:00AM - 9:00PM EST, so you should be able to get a hold of someone during the day fairly easily.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

My clock is set to the year 3016 and I can't change it. It won't allow me to do so. I'm going to reformat but was wondering if anyone knows what this issue is and how to avoid it. Thanks.

I'll try that but I never changed the BIOS clock. So is that a virus that did it?

No idea, but the BIOS clock should change the Windows clock

Also setting the correct timezone and syncing with internet time servers should do it

It didn't, so I just wiped and reinstalled W8 using the Home 64-bit disc from Dell. I went to PowerShell to verify Secure Boot via the confirm-SecureBootUEFI command and it said false. I double checked Secure Boot is ON and Boot Mode is UEFI in BIOS. BIOS has a new option under Secure Boot control, Clear Secure Boot Database but it is inaccessible. What to do to install W8 with Secure Boot ON?

To be honest if you don't know how to change UEFI to get Secure Boot up and running it's probably not worth doing! The situation you have here would seem to be malware of some type however as some users pointed out, your time was wrong and as you may or may not know the server allocated certificates check system time to check synchronicity for expiration. If you ever do get a problem like this again then I advise using the "Reset PC" option in Windows 8 PC settings menu or advanced options at the graphical/BW system options if you can't get a clean boot.

PS you don't want to clear the database because that has the keys in it!

    • Linux 7.1 arrives with an NTFS overhaul and major hardware performance boosts by Paul Hill The founder of the Linux kernel has just announced the availability of Linux 7.1. This is a stable version of the kernel that will now be tested by various Linux distributions before it is shipped to users through update managers. Some users, like those on Debian, for example, might not get it for a long time, if at all, while Fedora users can expect it in the near future. With Linux 7.1 out on time, the merge window for Linux 7.2 is now open, giving contributors the opportunity to send in major new features that have been waiting for the last two months. Torvalds warned that he is currently travelling and will be in another timezone, so timing for the merge window may be irregular due to timezone differences and limited internet access. Torvalds said that he has already fetched early pull requests to allow him to do some offline work, but the travel could still cause disruption. Right now, he is not planning to extend the release, but did consider it. He said he might later regret not extending, though. In terms of this last week of development for Linux 7.1, Torvalds said there were no major or alarming changes. This week consisted mostly of smaller driver updates to GPU, networking, and sound, networking fixes, trace tooling fixes, and misc minor fixes. The shortlog this week lists fixes for driver bugs, memory leaks, I/O and USB fixes, networking and RDMA fixes, DRM/graphics fixes, and tooling and verification improvements. Specific fixes include USB series heap-overflow and buffer overflow fixes, and multiple use-after-free, memory-leak, and refcount corrections across subsystems such as i2c, zram, gpio, and net. There are fixes for graphics drivers, including amdgpu, i915, and virtio, as well as hypervisor and virtualization tweaks affecting mshv, vmbus, and hyperv. According to Phoronix, anyone running Linux 7.1 should look out for the new NTFS driver, Intel FRED for improved performance on Panther Lake and future CPUs, faster graphics with Intel Arc Battlemage, and improvements for older AMD Radeon GPUs. If you are running Linux on your computer and everything is fine, then you don’t need to worry about updating to Linux 7.1 as a priority; just wait for it to be pushed to you. If you have tried Linux on hardware but it didn’t work properly, trying again with a distro that uses Linux 7.1 could cause Linux to work on your machine, thanks to the new hardware support.
