It started with the app store. I could not install apps cause something went wrong. I could not switch to a local user cause something went wrong. I tried to refresh, but I couldn't cause something went wrong and I also try to do a reset/reinstall from pc-settings, but something went wrong.

What can I do to fix this ? I don't have a windows cd or anything cause I just bought the upgrade from windows 7. Please help!!

Please try to be more descriptive. What were these things that "went wrong", and when did they occur? Did you receive an error message(s)? What were you doing (or trying to do) when the problems occurred?

Do you have any System Restore points made?

I tried to reply in a helpful matter, but something went wrong....<<<See how that could be a broad range of anything? Define "Something"..oh, and check your error logs in Win 8....should tell you exactly what happened, as opposed to just "Something"....what, did it have a flat? That's "something", now isn't it? O.o

Hi Ampersand please provide more detailed information and ant error messages your recieved

1: What happened when you tried to install the app from the windows store?

2:When you switched to local user did you use the correct name and password both of which are different to the other log in?

3: When you tried to reset or reinstall what method did you use and exactly what occoured?

It doesnt give me any error codes. When I try to buy or install anything from the windows store it says your purchase couldn't be completed - something happened and your purchase can't be completed. Thats the main problem. When I click to see what kind of apps I got installed the list is empty and it asks me to login. When I click the login link nothing happens.

In the Change PC Settings I get problems too, I can't log of to a local account. I get the message saying we're sorry but something went wrong. Your microsoft account wasn't changed to a local account. Code 0x80004005

And like this happens to when I try to refresh, reinstall, using restore points etc etc ....I also made a boot disk on the USB following a tutorial but it gives me same same errors too. I'm not getting anywhere right now!

How can I view the error log ?

Do you have Webroot antivirus software prior to version 8.0.2.79 installed? see here http://answers.micro...e9-fc9ebb87a44b

Webroot Software

Webroot antivirus software prior to version 8.0.2.79 mistakenly removes core Windows 8 operating system registry entries required for Microsoft account sign in. If you are running a version of Webroot prior to 8.0.2.79, you should update immediately.

Ah right see the following page regarding activation which may be the issue on your system

Windows activation fails and may generate error code 0x8004FE33 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921471

Activation fails when you try to activate one of the following Windows operating systems over the Internet:

  • Windows 8
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows Server 2012
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008

Additionally, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Activation fails and generates error code 0x8004FE33.

I dont have the webroot installed, but I did install the diskmax and ccleaner yesterday and the problems happend after that. I will try and install windows7 and then upgrade again, but is there a way I can do another upgrade from W7 without paying for W8 a second time? and how :)

Thanks

Download windows 8 again.http://windows.micro...-US/windows/buy and use your key then make a dvd or usb installer.

How can I enter the key, I just get the Windows 8 in my cart and I dont see a way to download it without paying like $400

Try the SLUI 04 registration method as mentioned above

I will try that

Click on "Get Started" and run the files it will check your key and download windows 8.

Also as long as an os is detected you can run the upgrade like a fresh install.

It says the download options is not available in my region. So I guess Im out of luck ? I managed to download and install the first time, but not anymore

Try the SLUI 04 registration method as mentioned above

I did, but MS support is closed today, but looking at My Computer - Properties it says my Windows 8 is activated.

There no need to reinstall windows 7 to upgrade, just use windows 8 installer disk, and use your key.

When I bought the upgrade, I just did a clean install using windows 8 and the key provided to me, this installed straight away with no problems.

By any chance have you possibly exceeded the 5 machine limit for your Microsoft Account? I have encountered some very odd store problems a few times when attempting to use my account on a sixth machine (or on the same machine after sysprep, or when swapping my hard drive between machines), and it has failed to give me proper notification on why the store failed to work. When I've encountered this issue the Store doesn't really give me errors, it just fails to work.

Assuming this is your problem, open the Store, Charm Bar, Your Account, and under Your PCs remove machines until you only have 4 that are authorized.

Many times now Windows has properly informed me that I've exceeded my computer limit, but at least three times now it utterly failed to notify.

I've never logged in to Windows 8 as a Microsoft account. Only domain accounts and local accounts, and only after that do I sign in to my Microsoft Account. I have no idea what type of oddities could occur with Microsoft Account logons if you exceed the 5 machine limit and Windows fails to realize it.

I found the upgrade download for my area, but it says my product key doesn't work

Refresh your PC or reinstall and then refresh. If it does not activate, from the activation screen choose contact or other method. When you call, if it asks how many pcs you've installed it on, make sure you say 1, even if this is a reinstall on a new PC. If you say more than one, the automated line will basically hang up on you.

You actually cannot use an upgrade license to do a clean install. So install using that key, then you have to refresh, then call in and activate.

I tried using a refresh and the other install option from PC Settings > general but it fails on both. Also any recovery options are failing.

Im pretty sure that I havent exceeded the limit.

I used the jelly bean to get my product key, seems like it was giving me the wrong key somehow. I found the receipt from the Microsoft store with the correct key and Im now installing Windows 8 over again

Thanks for all the help and comments folks. Im still not sure what happend, but I reinstalled the win8 upgrade and now everything seems to work. Just have to remember make some system restore points now (even Im sure I had that last time too, but somehow they were gone) :)

Thanks

    • I'm still on Windows 10 22H2 because I didn't want to deal with all the issues in Windows 11, so I waited almost a week before installing the latest Patch Tuesday update (KB5094127), I went ahead and did it, and it was a huge mistake—ever since then, my File Explorer has seen a performance drop of about 30% when transferring large files... Once again, Microsoft has outdone itself! This update cannot be uninstalled, either through the Control Panel (via Settings) or by accessing Advanced Startup Options. The only possible alternative would be to use system restore points, but I’d have to reinstall all app and driver updates (and there’s no guarantee it would work). Or there’s the “nuclear option” of a in-place repair without losing files or apps, but even then, all my customizations would be lost! Microsoft just can’t help but mess everything up! Way to go, Microsoft! But I still don’t want your c****y Windows 11!
    • Microsoft: Windows 11 could finally solve a major issue across AMD, Nvidia, and Intel GPUs by Sayan Sen While Microsoft has been trying to improve it, Windows 11 is definitely not flawless, as even today some issues are taking a year to publicly acknowledge. However, one area of trouble that may finally see much better results soon is graphics driver crashes. Work on graphics driver timeouts, also called Timeout and Detection Recovery (TDR), is not new as the latest WDDM 3.2 also has specific improvements regarding it. Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) version 3.2 is supported on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. However, with the upcoming version 26H2, TDR crash diagnosis could go to the next level as Microsoft is introducing a new DirectX 12 API feature called "DirectX Dump Files". Similar to how system memory dump files work when a system crashes or freezes or encounters any such major issue, DirectX Dump Files (DDF) will essentially record a snapshot of the GPU execution right at the moment a graphics-related crash or hang or freeze occurs, so that developers can better understand and diagnoze these TDR and timeout detection errors. The dump will be available as a .dxdmp file for analysis and it will be a comprehensive dump file generated with detailed insights about the hardware, drivers, Windows, as well as the affected application. This should be another welcome change in this department. Earlier at GDC 2026, when the technology was first debuted, Microsoft had shared more details regarding it. The company had explained how DDF is designed to gather data from every layer of the graphics stack into a single file, eliminating the need for developers to manually correlate logs from multiple tools. As mentioned above, the dump can contain a lot of useful details like GPU hardware state information such as register values, shader program counters, page fault virtual addresses, shader memory data, and command buffers. Alongside that, it also captures DirectX runtime and kernel information, including D3D objects, pipeline state objects, device error data, adapter details, and CPU call stacks. Microsoft says the feature has been built around two primary use cases: retail device removals and local device removals. The former allows developers to collect crash information from end users' systems in the field, while the latter helps QA teams and developers investigate issues on test machines. Developers will also be able to include up to 2 MB of custom application data through new D3D12 APIs, providing additional context for troubleshooting. In addition, Microsoft is introducing three dump collection modes ranging from zero-overhead capture, which has no runtime performance impact on supported hardware, to higher-detail modes that collect more vendor-specific debugging data. On compatible Tier 2 hardware, zero-overhead dumps will be enabled by default, meaning developers may begin receiving useful crash diagnostics without making any code changes. The table below explains the three tiers: Tier Description NO_OVERHEAD Enables crash capture with no runtime cost and is suitable for broad deployment MEDIUM_OVERHEAD Provides a balance, capturing additional diagnostic data with moderate impact HIGH_OVERHEAD Collects the most detailed GPU and driver state available, enabling deeper investigation at the cost of higher runtime overhead In terms of availability, the company expects broader release to be around the fall of 2026, which should be right around the time when Windows 11 version 26H2 lands. Right now, DirectX Dump Files are available as a preview and currently, only AMD has the compatible AgilitySDK Developer Preview driver version 26.10.07.02. You can find the official announcement post here on Microsoft's website.
