Using another phone number with mobile phones?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. A rather unique request was posed to me that I honestly don't know anything about so I wanted to ask if anyone on here has dealt with this.

We are seeing more and more staff opting to use their own mobile phones for work purposes, and are wondering if there is any way to give them a phone number that would be able to be routed to their cell phones and allow them to call from...

Basically, we're looking for the ability to turn off a phone number should an employee leave our employ so that a customer can't call them erroneously for example.

We're presently on Verizon if that matters.

So, has anyone ever done anything like this or know how this can be accomplished?

Any help and information is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

It's been a while since I've done this (worked for a VoIP hardware manufacturer eight years ago), but many PBX systems allow you to redirect (hairpin) a call to another phone number based on whatever DID rules you've set up. If your PBX is SS7-aware, I believe it's done all out-of-band. If not, your PBX ends up being the relay and using both the FXO line (or SIP call appearance) the phone call was placed on and an FXS line for the outbound communication.

What I would suggest is looking in the documentation for your phone system on how to do this, or, failing that, call your reseller, and ask them about the changes. If this is something you're going to be doing regularly (adding, changing moving, and deleting users) be sure to either get them to train you to do it, or negotiate a retainer for them to perform X amount of hours a month to handle this. You'll appreciate having them be able to take care of these at a moment's notice, and they'll appreciate booking the regular revenue. Win-win-win for you, them, and your employees.
