+Warwagon MVC Posted July 1, 2013 MVC Share Posted July 1, 2013 Have you ever heard someone say it's cheaper to go out and eat than the cook at home? When l recently when I went to walmart I wrote down the prices of what it takes to make a grilled cheese sandwich with a slice of turkey. white turkey Oscar Mayer White smoked Turkey $2.50 : 16 slices : .16 cents per sandwich Great Value American Singles $2.68 : 24 Slices : .11 cents per sandwich. SaraLee 45 Calories & Delightful Bread : 26 Slices: Found it at walmart as low as $3.08 : .12 cents per slice or .24 cents per sandwich. Obviously all of these prices really are determined where you live. These are the prices in the Midwest in Iowa. So per meal It's .51 cents per sandwich If you have 2 of them for a meal that's $1.02 And if you eat twice per day that's $2.04 Cents per day If you can find some cheaper bread it would be even less yet! What can I say, I was bored!
spudtrooper
Cheap, but certainly not very healthy. I'd rather grow some veggies and make a BLT MikeChipshop, theyarecomingforyou and Syanide 3 Share

James Rose
When I first moved out on my own I ate a lot of Balogna sandwiches. NEVER again.I will agree that it is technically possible, however it is worth mentioning that after one week of this you wouldn't want to live. +Warwagon MVC Posted July 1, 2013 Author MVC Share Posted July 1, 2013 No... So, you use cheese, turkey, and bread. No butter? Nope I put it in one of those sandwich makers. Cheap, but certainly not very healthy. I'd rather grow some veggies and make a BLT Well you have your grain / Milk / protein / fiber / meat For the last week i've been having 4 of those per day. They are soooooo yummy! So I wanted to see how much I was spending.
MightyJordan
Have you ever heard someone say it's cheaper to go out and eat than the cook at home? No. Never. And I'd question the sanity of anyone who does say that. Praetor, AJerman and pack34 3 Share
AJerman
I love bologna and cheese sandwiches, I don't give a damn what anyone thinks. :D No, I don't think I've ever heard anyone say it's cheaper to go out and eat than cook at home. I don't think that's ever been true. In fact, I was just thinking today how asininely expensive food is to eat out now. I went and picked up a sandwich from Jimmy Johns and with chips and a drink my total was almost $10!!!!! It wasn't but a handful of years ago when $5 was expensive for one person to eat. Now the norm is closer to $10. Hell, even a ###### combo meal at a fast food restaurant ends up being $7 now. I admit, I'm a bit lazy and not the best at making myself a lunch before work, but I'm going to have to start. The food industry is getting ridiculous with their pricing these days. LittleNeutrino Veteran Posted July 1, 2013 Veteran Share Posted July 1, 2013 (edited) you are paying Way too much for that food. I will not go into a breakdown as i would have to find out what the prices are however, i have been eating lunch for very cheap for a few years now with this concept. go to GFS or any other bulk restaurant store. 1 Package Deli Turkey (the whole thing like what you would see in your deli counter) Pay for them to slice it and then freeze part of it, you can generally get 15 or so pounds of meat this way for like $10 1 Loaf of local bread usually around $0.86 I do not use American cheese it is gross Peanut butter bars Generic package from bulk store 24 bars for $5 It usually means that I can have 2 sandwiches 1 snack bar, and then I drink water and tea at work so i dont count a beverage into the meal. for about $1.20 or so per day. For Clarification i never purchase bologna i always buy whole meat turkey (not watered down garbage) Edited July 1, 2013 by littleneutrino

threetonesun
There are things that are cheaper in restaurants versus making at home. . Especially when servings are an issue. Good luck making 1 serving of Pad Thai for less than what it would cost at a restaurant. On the other hand, if you like meat, you could eat a good steak cooked at home every night for what it costs to eat out, even at a fast food place. 4CxbqFxVnstmA Veteran Posted July 1, 2013 Veteran Share Posted July 1, 2013 I guess you'll lose weight on the 4-sandwich diet you mention, warwagon, if that's what you're after. But it worries me. :/ I buy better quality food, organic whenever possible, free range eggs, lots of good vegetables and meats. It costs me about a third of what McDonald's would cost. :) I think that might be a healthier way to go. You may not feel the effects of your two dollar diet now, but it will catch up with you: weakness in the body, collapsing immune system leading to colds and flu and worse, inability to think clearly, impotence, hair loss... that sort of thing. :/
Astra.Xtreme
If you don't want processed meats and cheese, it wouldn't be that much more expensive to get fresh sliced stuff at the store's deli. That way you could alternate types and not get sick of it as fast. Otherwise, ramen noodles cost close to nothing, Lean Cuisines and some frozen pizzas are almost always $2/ea., rice and canned veggies are always cheap, there are plenty of soup cans that are a dollarish that would suffice for a meal, boxes of pasta are cheap, etc etc There are millions of ways to make each meal a couple dollars and remain very nutritional. threetonesun
You could also catch and grill your own fish, and it would only cost the pole + some bait. Grow some vegetables from seed and it would even be healthy. Might cost you $50 a year, at most. Granted, you might be hungry if you're not very good at fishing, but cheap! +Warwagon MVC Posted July 3, 2013 Author MVC Share Posted July 3, 2013 What about real cheese instead of that? Ya you could do that might raise the price. Like I buy a 2lbs bag of cheese. I go through about 1 per week. I ad that to the sandwich. Adds about .53 cents per sandwich.

Nick H. Supervisor Posted July 4, 2013 Supervisor Share Posted July 4, 2013 As a snack - or even the occasional lazy meal - it works. But as others have said, I need variety. I once spent the better part of a month eating the same sandwich for lunch while at work. I can't remember what it was now, but I had to stop because it became nauseating. tytytucke
How about a bag of salad with your choice of meats and toppings with yogurt, cut fruit, and Whole grain bagels on the side. A higher price but much easier to eat over and over again with many different options. Anibal P 1 Share
vcfan
you can get 2 pizza pops for $0.99. if you eat twice a day,two each time, thats less than 2 bucks a day too.
cropcircles
Save even more and go with the Salami sandwich with a little Mayo and a bowl of Ramen noodles. Totally unhealthy but pretty good and cheap.
pack34
An easy and cheap meal is also to poach an egg with a serving of Ramen. You can also toss some veggies in there too. Takes slightly more time than slapping together a sandwich though.
