Elliot B.
I was just thinking about this whilst walking through the office and seeing the dozens of monitors with rather large "Dell" letters on the back of each one. We're paying for the product, but we're also offering such companies free advertising. e.g. Apple having the Apple logo on their products, Samsung having the word "Samsung" on their phones, TVs etc. Just seems strange to me. Nick H. Supervisor Posted August 23, 2013 Supervisor Share Posted August 23, 2013 What an odd thing to think about... Personally I have no problem with it. I don't buy a product for it's branding, I buy it because it does what I want. But some people buy macbook's because Apple is the "in" thing, and they want to show off what they have to others. Max Norris
Eh personally it's been like that for so long I pretty much "tune it out". Even my old systems from the late 70's/early 80's had logos all over them, never mind it's on pretty much everything... clothes, appliances, cars, even my toothbrush.. it's probably been like that for over 100 years. KingCracker
If the product works and doesn't break or malfunction then I have no problem with the brand being on it. Also the brand name being on the product helps me determine before I buy it if its a good Idea to own it or not.

+John Teacake MVC Posted August 23, 2013 MVC Share Posted August 23, 2013 Its not just computer stuff, Brands are everywhere. It certainly serves a purpose yes. My friend has a nice monitor, I see the LG sticker on it so I go off in search of it and I know where to look. I guess its a anchoring technique. Ooh that's pretty. Its a xyz brand etc
neufuse Veteran Posted August 23, 2013 Veteran Share Posted August 23, 2013 I think it's more odd people put brand names on things that have nothing to do with them and then even paid to do it!... example: you have a car, you like Samsung, so you pay to get big Samsung vinyl decals applied to your car..... why? YOU just paid to advertise for them, when they should be paying you for that space! Now that is more odd then a company being proud of their products so they put their name on them
Buttus
I would rather have a brand on my items than nothing at all. Especially if I like the product. Its the difference between generic and name brand. i'm just the opposite. i'd rather have no logo's or words on my stuff. i'd like stuff to have nice clean edges, backs, fronts, etc... like the apple that lights up on some mac laptops i've seen, that would annoy me to no end! luckily, if i was using it, it would be on the back

Phouchg
Why does Audi have the rings etc. then? Tear them off. What I'm increasingly not happy about is various other markings like CE, warnings, serial numbers on white stickers and MagicBrights and bogus contrast numbers and oh so many stupid stickers on laptops (used to include specs). Brand and model needs to be there so it can be identified when necessary. That and serial number, engraved in a discreet location is all that is needed. But no.... Max Norris
oh so many stupid stickers on laptopsUgh those annoy me something ugly.. at least make them so they can be easily and cleanly pulled off without leaving glue and half the sticker behind. I don't mind the logos on the devices that are molded with the chassis, but stickers.... gah.

+Warwagon MVC Posted August 23, 2013 MVC Share Posted August 23, 2013 To go even further what about companies like "Mountain Dew" that put their logs on the front of shirts AND PEOPLE BUY THEM AND WEAR THEM AROUND, people PAY them to advertise for them. Here is a $12 shirt that you can buy from Target to help advertise for Mountain Dew http://www.target.com/p/men-s-mountain-dew-graphic-tee-black/-/A-14402214?ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001&AFID=Google_PLA_df&LNM=|14402214&CPNG=Women&kpid=14402214&LID=PA&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=14402214&gclid=CMecz6rnk7kCFalcMgodzG8AhQ

MikeChipshop Member Posted August 23, 2013 Member Share Posted August 23, 2013 Yeah does seem odd. Not quite up there with people paying extortionate prices for SkyTV, only to be advertised to all through it. jakem1 and jamieakers 2 Share

Charisma Veteran Posted August 23, 2013 Veteran Share Posted August 23, 2013 Why do artists sign their paintings/artwork... proud of their work. This. I mean, cars have the brand on it... many things do. I'm looking around my desk... my Linksys switch, my Logitech peripherals, my NEC phone, my Swingline stapler, my Scotch tape, even my dry erase board has the brand name at the bottom. It's not really advertising, it's just indicating who made the product.
lnmnky
That's why I like Muji products....http://www.muji.eu/ Let's say I live alone, and I know that my HiFi is a Sony. The branding provides no extra value to anyone, as no one will ever see it. So why put it there? I personally never wear logos either (except on my sports trainers). The biggest brand I will wear are vintage t-shirts with unknown businesses / events on. (You can see a Girl Scouts t-shirt in my sig below from about 5 years ago) Also, why do people have brands on underwear? Pointless.
Dotdot
Its all to do with recognition and brand awareness. Being a brand name in advertising is a big deal. The more your name appears on products and is cemented and associated in peoples minds, the better. Pure business psychology.
