moeburn
So this old lady that volunteers with me at the local NDP party asked me to fill up her new iPod with a bunch of music (I think its an iPod Touch 5th gen, the MD717C/A). So I did, but now it's downloading an IOS 7 update (without my permission, or any way to cancel it. Thanks for interrupting my Netflix streaming on another computer, Apple!). I know absolutely nothing about Apple products, because I avoid them with a passion. It took me about an hour just to figure out how to copy music to it (what's wrong with the drag-and-drop mass storage device method that every other mp3 player uses?!). She's a 70 year old woman, and she didn't know how to download music, or even that a thing called "itunes" existed - not trying to be mean, just trying to give you an idea of her technical expertise. So should I go through with the update? Will the general OS and buttons and app layout look the same, specifically the music app? Would it be difficult and confusing for her to learn? For example, I wouldn't recommend that an old lady who knew how to use Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 8; it requires quite a bit of re-learning and time and investment. Is it just as much of a jump to go from IOS 6 to IOS 7? Or should I just stick with IOS 6, and disable wifi completely, since that seems to be the only way to stop it from upgrading itself? Denis W. Veteran Posted September 23, 2013 Veteran Share Posted September 23, 2013 The core music app hasn't changed much. It might be better now as when the device is locked, you can bring up the music controls on the lock screen without having to double press the home button. Two minor functionality changes in the music app though: - Cover Flow is gone. It's a wall of album art (a la Windows Media Center) - The album selector now also lets you navigate the current playing playlist. The only new UI conventions she would need to learn is swiping from the bottom to access the Control Center and swiping up a card on the multitasking screen to close an app (might not be immediately obvious you can swipe them for new users). Otherwise the rest of the OS is, functionality wise, same as before.
Max Veteran Posted September 23, 2013 Veteran Share Posted September 23, 2013 It will prompt you to update it. Apart from some graphical things, generally most things will remain the same, especially for an 'old lady' who won't use it for anything more than music. HellboundIRL
I would leave it as it is, you only get yourself into trouble when you do updates for people who aren't tech savvy, they don't like things changing on them. Unless she downloads apps she probably won't see much value in changing how everything looks and you'll just get it in the neck "what have you done to my ipod etc.." I so agree. Been there, done that.
moeburn
ok, thanks for the advice everyone! :) so it seems that once the update has finished downloading, it lets the user choose whether or not to install it. So I'll just let her know about that, and how to install it if she wants. I just wish it would ask before it even started downloading the update, so as to not waste my bandwidth. oh well .
