I started a thread about this roughly two months ago:
http://www.neowin.ne...something-else/
I was wondering if I should get the Lumia 925 or if I should wait for something else. I decided to wait, especially since Nokia World was coming up.
Nokia World started today, and I can't tell for sure if it also ends today or not. Nokia's keynote involved only large phones and tablets. I'd like a phone with an average-sized screen. Is it likely another big Nokia event is right around the corner, especially with Christmas coming up, or is it more probable that Nokia is finished with product announcements for the year?

Why not get the 1020 instead? On amazon its $145. Yes it is missing the 1080p screen BUT it still has the awesome camera, and the 2 gigs of ram.

I rarely take pictures. I can't even remember the last picture I took. If I did take pictures, the Lumia 1020 would be the obvious choice. I'd rather save on thickness and weight by getting the Lumia 925. I also like that it has a smaller screen with the same resolution as the Lumia 1020.
But back to the question itself: is it likely another big Nokia event is right around the corner, especially with Christmas coming up, or is it more probable that Nokia is finished with product announcements for the year?

You could also just buy a Lumia 520 for $99 of contract and see what happens in the spring when 8.1 comes out, there must be new devices coming out around then I would guess?

I don't think Nokia is releasing any other devices anymore this year. The only segment they were still missing was the phablet size. Now they released those they have a full range of phones and most models aren't even a year old.

there will probably be new phones towards the release of windows phone 8.1. im guessing that's when we'll see the real successor to the 920, with a 1080p screen, quad code cpu,etc..

I wouldn't want a Lumia 520 since I already have a Samsung Focus. A Lumia 520 would be a lateral move--if not a step backward--in my case. Still, thanks for the idea. If I just wanted to try out the Windows Phone world, that phone might be worthwhile.

I really don't want to wait until spring. I've waited long enough. Unless another Nokia phone is coming out before the end of this year, I'll probably get a Lumia 925.

The screens are the same size and resolution on both the 925 and the 1020. The 1020 has the 2 gigs of ram that the 925 does not. Plus it has more storage.

I'm stilo about to get a lumia 925,my only concern is wether it will get WP8.1 (and beyond?) since I don't want to be left behind as they did with WP7

yeah I doubt another phone is coming out before then,so just bite the bullet and go for the 925. it will still fly with windows phone 8.1 .

Wow. I didn't realize that. I always thought the Lumia 1020's screen was bigger.

I think Microsoft said during their Windows Phone 8 announcement that they'll be keep updating Windows Phone 8 phones for 1.5 years after purchase. I hope that means major updates and not just minor updates and fixes.

With the new developer preview program going live now with Update 3 (GDR3) I have no doubt that all WP8 devices will be able to update to 8.1.  The idea behind the program wouldn't work if it forced developers (the ones it's officially meant for) to buy new hardware over and over.  Now if a carrier wants to block it that's one thing but using the program you can just update when it's done from MS.  I expect a 8.1 beta to come out early next year, probably around February.   The only thing to remember is that if you're under contract that doing this does void your warranty so the carrier won't cover your device at all.   For me personally I bought my 8X at retail for full price so I don't have a carrier over my head or a warranty anymore (the basic retail warranty is over now).   So for me I don't care, and I'm sure many others don't either.

besides, with MS promised support times on their phones and WP all 8 devices should get 8.1 and technically there's no reason they shouldn't get the next few versiosn either as 8 was the big kernel update, any planned updates beyond this is just frontend which won't affect the devices like the kernel update did.

The WP7 - 8 scenario was due to them updating the core WP Kernel to that of the desktop and server OS's, when 7 was released this Kernel was still being worked on.

Now that this is a shared kernel, a repeat of the complete platform overhaul should never be required.

Take that along with the pledges from MS about support, and I think you can rest easy on this one.
