8.1 Upgrade Woes - Any Help Appreciated

Question

Against my better judgement, I decided to finally take the plunge and upgrade to Windows 8.

I chose to upgrade as I just did a clean install of 8 less than 2 weeks ago, and really as of right now only had the essentials installed.

Well, I have the following issues, and hoping people can point me in the right direction.

  • Java Keeps crashing.

I need it for Universal Media Server which is the app I have always used to stream movies to my PS3 and 360. Everytime I try to run UMS, Java SE Runtime crashes, looks online for a solution, and finds nothing. I know people are super anti Java, that is fine for your needs. I use it, and would like it to work if possible.

I did try to reinstall Java. No luck. Should I uninstall it completely?

  • No Sound coming out the speakers.

I have a Creative XiFi Fatality Platinum sound card. Sound control panel is pointing towards it. Mixer shows the system is recognizing sound. Yet nothing is coming out. Going to try reinstalling the Creative Software, have yet to try that.

  • Logitech Software Not Working

I have both a Logitech Mouse & Keyboard, and the software loaded once upon a restart, but I have not seen it again since I restarted multiple times.

So does anyone know what I can do to fix the above? I am off to Google it all myself, but figure I would post this prior to doing so as I am sure some people know the answers to the above.

TIA, DL

Update

Uninstalled Logitech.

No changes in anything else.

Uninstalled Java.

Sound worked.

Installed an app called Servio to stream my movies as read it was a good alternative to UMS, turns out it also required Java, so it reinstalled Java (Version 6 I believe it said), once again Java is working.

So Universal Media Server is also working.

Sound still not working.

Device Manager reports it is using an older driver then what Creative website says it should be.

Going to uninstall and reinstall Creative drivers eventually, maybe tonight, probably tomorrow.

Hoping that resolves sound issues.

Also have yet to try Logitech Software again, as read a lot of people have issues on 8.1.

I had a few problems too, with stuff no longer working.

Reinstalling apps/drivers over the top of the previous install didn't work, where uninstalling first solved the problem.

Think there was a warning during the setup that mentioned we might have to do this.

Thanks, this is basically what it took, uninstalling completely, then installing the same exact driver version, which is just stupid IMHO. No new drivers, same exact ones.

I have Logitech back working.

Java is installed even though I think it is an older version, not sure.

Still have yet to try installing Creative as I finally got my sound working in a consistent manner without their drivers.

I find a thread on some forum with someone who had the same exact issue as me with their Creative XiFi.

It works initially, but if you restart, it no longer works.

Only way to get it to work again is to go to Device Manager, remove the device, restart, then it works.

Restart again, it stops working.

So I think something is up with Creative's drivers.

I am sticking with the default driver for now I guess.

May give it one more shot with their drivers.

Did you check compatibility issues before upgrading?

Did I check if devices that worked no issues under Windows 8 had any compatibility issues in 8.1? I checked if any of my devices had a new driver for 8.1. None did at all.

In general I always reinstall software when doing an upgrade for the simple fact that the installer might enable some otherwise disabled stuff which the old OS didn't support. To avoid having to reinstall 50 apps though I do the clean install which helps me get rid of stuff that I haven't used in a while as well.

With that said seems you got mostly everything working but for Java i'd expect a complete uninstall/reinstall at min. I'm sure it stores some files in the Windows directory which is now called Windows.OLD so the runtime would fail when it can no longer find it's files.

So while you technically did an upgrade, you are basically on a clean install. Your Users Folder (includes desktop and settings and all that) wasn't changed and some settings from the registry were copied but yeah, you're still on a clean install again except with data already lingering around.

Okay, I can absolutely confirm the Creative Drivers suck.

I did a complete uninstall, restarted, Windows installed default sound driver.

Restarted, default sound driver still there. Sound working.

Decide to try Creative Drivers one more time (this is the 3rd time now with a complete uninstall).

Works after I install and restart.

They do not work after a restart.

They just do not work.

On default sound drivers for now, which kind of sucks, no advanced options at all for my sound.

Logitech Gaming Software seems to work when it wants to. That is also after a complete uninstall. Complete.

It works some times, others it does not. The times it does not work, it is like the software is not even there on my computer. I find it under Search, but if I go to open it, nothing happens.

Right now it is working though, so I just will not restart (which I actually do not do very often to begin with).

So it appears Logitech & Creative need to step it up and get some drivers that either A) work at all or B) consistently work.

I did not even mention the fact that choosing Upgrade apparently forced me to now use my MS account. Even though I chose Customize on install, my local account is no longer an option, I now am tied into my MS account to log on to my computer. Not happy about that at all.

Creative has always had driver issues. You're lucky you have sound. Logitech will most likely fix things soon.

Disconnect your Microsoft account if you want to switch back to a local account, it takes under a minute. Type 'account' at start, it's the first one that pops up.

Go to your account settings and disconnect from your MS account. It will make you sign into a local account.

Booooooo....JoeUser beat me to it haha

Booooooo....I misspelled Joe USer :-P

Actually, it's supposed to be Joe User, but back in 1985 my shift key broke and it became Joe USer. The typo stuck around....for about 29 years. (The lesson here is always fix your typos)

Okay, I can absolutely confirm the Creative Drivers suck.

I haven't been able to install Creative drivers since Vista. They didn't work for me on Seven (the first x64 OS I ran full time), and they still don't work for me on Eight. I gave up on them and defaulted to Windows' built in drivers.

Damn that sucks. They always worked no issues at all for me in both 7 and most recently 8. I was actually surprised as they seemed better than ever as well, never really liked them in XP. In fact the only reason I even stuck with them is I got the sound card for free. I may just uninstall the card and go onboard. However...

Creative drivers do suck. I would recommend looking at Daniel K's drivers. http://danielkawakami.blogspot.com/

Hmmm, looks like he does not have drivers yet for my card.

However there does appear to be a fix for the issue I am having.

http://forums.creative.com/showthread.php?t=699941

Apparently I need to install the drivers, change some settings, put the computer to sleep, reboot, and that should keep the Creative drivers active.

I think for now I will just stay with default. I may even go with my onboard sound. Will see.

my logitech software is forking fine with my g110 have not had any issues, i also updated the software via logitech software also

When it actually works, it seems to be working fine, it is just for whatever reason it does not always launch at startup and on top of that it is like it is nowhere to be found either. This is after a complete uninstall. Twice now actually.

It seems something at startup is interfering with it, thing is I do not have much going on at startup at all, so really not sure what it could be. I absolutely prefer to use the Logitech Software though over the Windows Default. My mouse has adjustable/programmable dpi which I always take advantage of, my keyboard has an LCD display that works with EVGA Precision X and allows me to monitor my temps, FPS, etc., so I really prefer that they stay working, just have no clue why they will not.

THanks Joe USer and Neu B on how to disable the MS account. (Y)

The upgrader literally forced me to set it up in order to proceed. I clicked back on that option 3 times hoping I could skip it, and it was the only way to actually proceed with the upgrade. That was suspect indeed.

Are they trustworthy?

Yes! Dan creates reverse engineered versions of the official drivers. Creative actually took him to court but ended up hiring him. He is allowed to post his stuff on the official creative fourms and nowhere else. So make sure you get them from there. I run them on my rig perfectly fine.

So an update I can provide.

The trick of making changes to anything in the Creative Control Panel, then manually setting your computer to Sleep, does in fact keep the drivers running on a restart.

With that said, turns out you have to do this every single time before restarting your computer if you want to use this trick, which is just ridiculous.

So as of now, no Creative drivers on on my computer. I also could not install those other drivers as there are none for my device yet, although they are said to be coming.

On to the Logitech Gaming Software.

It is just very, very odd what is happening. I can install the Software, it works right away once I do, but when I restart, it just disappears.

The very strange thing is although they are gone, some of the settings I made in them appear to be working. My mouse has 5 programmable stages of DPI, and that appears to be fully functional when I change it via my mouse.

However my keyboard has an LCD on it, and if they software works I am able to load Applets on that LCD Display, and that is definitely not working.

I tried checking off run as an Administrator, and also tried playing around with Compatibility Mode, both under Task Manager > Startup > Properties of the Logitech Gaming Software, but again, the app itself just disappears on startup, although some features do in fact seem to be active. It is quite bewildering.

Java seems to be working with whatever version Servio installed as part of it's installer.

So yeah, looks like Logitech & especially Creative need to release some new drivers sooner rather than later.

If anyone knows of any 3rd party drivers compatible with a Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional series sound card, please share. I am willing to try anything at this point.

Just keeping my fingers crossed I can actually run Battlefield 4 tomorrow. Have it preloaded, and hoping the issues I am having do not wind up negatively impacting the game itself.

Thanks to everyone that offered advice and helped me troubleshoot this all. I absolutely regret going to 8.1 and just wish I stayed on 8.

I won't be of much help, but I can affirm the Logitech software being dodgy under Windows 8.1. I have a Solar keyboard and a M705 mouse. The unifying software installs, runs perfect, but is unable to detect any hardware. If I run the solar app (to check the battery) it says it's unable to find a compatible keyboard. Also if I try to connect a new piece of hardware to my unifying receiver (a new mouse) it's unable to detect it. The same receiver and keyboard / mouse works flawlessly under Windows 8.0 and Windows 7. I had to connect my new hardware using the unifying software under Windows 7 (another machine) to get my keyboard and mouse working again under 8.1.

Yeah, it is no longer working once again for myself either.

What is this unifying software? I have another machine with 7 on it, so if I can somehow getting it working using it, I would no doubt try it. Not having my side buttons on my mouse is really throwing me off in Battlefield 4 as I always bounded my knife to it.  :(

Also not having my usual good sound through my Creative sound card blows big time as well. This is really unfortunate, and I am heavily considering taking the 2-3 hours to revert back to plain 8.

Unifying from Logitech is a program which allows you to connect multiple Logitech devices to a single Logitech Unifying receiver. You're able to connect up to 6 different Unifying Logitech devices to one USB receiver. All this software does is connect a device to the receiver, but ever since Windows 8.1, it get the message no Unifying hardware is found. Had to disconnect my keyboard and mouse from the receiver and reconnect them using the same software under Windows 7. But if I buy or get a new Unifying capable Logitech device I won't be able to connect it under Windows 8.1, which is a shame. But I haven't tried my thumb buttons to be honest, will test that for you to see if that works.

Maybe contact Creative support and ask them when they plan on releasing a new driver? I know this is a long shot, but still, not being able to use your hardware after an update...

Just to get back at my previous answer: I tested my mouse buttons and all the "standard buttons" worked on my mouse. I have this mouse: http://www.logitech.com/nl-nl/product/7108 . The left, middle, right mouse button, the side buttons (previous / next in your browser) worked, but the scrollwheel left / right scroll and my thumb button did not.

I uninstalled all my input related device drivers. I uninstalled my wacom driver, my laptop's touchpad driver, my HID keyboard drivers and used my power button to shut down my computer. During boot Windows automatically reinstalled my HID keyboard driver (logical) and I reinstalled my touchpad driver and mouse software, no my thumb buttons and left / right scrollwheel work fine again. Hope this helps you?
