Woman wins record breaking Prize on The Price Is Right

Extravagant cars are occasionally prizes on The Price Is Right, and today, Sheree Heil from Tacoma, Washington, had the opportunity to win one of the most expensive cars to ever appear on the show?a $157,300 Audi R8 V-8 Spyder. And unlike the poor contestant that lost a Ferrari 458 Spyder earlier this year, Sheree didn't miss her chance. She won the "Gas Money" round to become the biggest winner in the show's daytime history.

We're not sure of Sheree's current daily driver, but the odds are against it being a two-seater, 430-hp supercar with a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds. Top speed for this beauty? 186 mph. Her drive back to Washington might be a fast one.

Like quite a few of the comments have said (in the article), you gotta pay state and federal taxes on the winnings and it's based on MSRP - so it's likely sitting in the car on the show is the only time she'll actually ever see it or touch it. Unless she can afford the taxes of course. Still, that's an awesome win. I sure hope she can keep it!

Eh. If I won it, as fantastic as that car would be, I'd just sell it and take a boatload of cash.

You'd still need to pay taxes on it. It's probably for the best, or we would certainly see her wrapped around a telephone pole in the coming weeks.

Between Taxes, Titles, Insurance, Gas, etc she will spend more than the MSRP on the car in no time.

I bet we'll see an article in the near future about this women going bankrupt after getting taxed up the butt. It still amazes me that contestants have to pay the taxes and not the show. How that is legal is beyond me.

How much tax do you think she has to pay on that?

Oh and why must people pay tax on winnings in the US? Up here in Canada anything you win (lottery, contest, tv game show, etc) is tax free.

Prizes are considered income instead of gifts. It's "your" messed up tax code.

Yes I know that, but the windfall would still be much more than what you pay.

Yes, I know WHY they have to pay, but why it's still legal to get taxed on that stuff is what I don't understand. It SHOULD be tax free for the winner. The TV show should be the one taxed, or they should at least volunteer to pay it as a show of good faith, since they can easily pay it rather than a random contestant. The whole system is just disappointing, really.

I was excited to see her win, but god damn is she annoying. Would have been ever happier if her annoying ass lost it.

She won an expensive car.  What makes this the "best prize ever on The Price is Right"?  Have they never had anything worth more money won?

Here is a very sad truth using the exact price of that vehicle. the taxes alone on that vehicle is more than my parents paid for their first house. and more than i have paid in rent since i moved out.

I wouldn't want to win it, too much tax on a toy like that... would rather win money because you don't need money first to be taxed on money on won..

The taxes alone will ruin her financial situation.  Watch it being her family to lend her the money (for taxes) and some neighbor to steal the car.

Tax wouldn't be hard to pay when I sell my other car!

Most of the final "Showcase Showdown" prize sets are worth 20-40k at the most with multiple items. This car is worth 150k, so no, no one has ever won anything worth more.

Inflation taken into consideration on the house?  And how long have you been moved out?

Can you share the amount?

She will probably never own it.  She has to pay Cali tax, title, and license fees before she can ever drive it.  Plus the insurance on it alone is probably too expensive to drive it.  Personally, I would take the cash equivalent and not the car.

EDIT: The base price for this car is $128,400.

Cali Fees just to get it:

Current Registration:   43.00

Current California Highway Patrol:   23.00

Current Vehicle License Fee:   835.00

Current County Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies Fee:   1.00

Current Fingerprint ID Fee:   1.00

Current Smog High Polluter Repair Fee:   6.00

Original Smog Abatement:   6.00 Alt Fuel/Tech Smog Fee:   8.00

Current Auto Theft and/or DUI Crime Deterrence Program:   1.00

Current Air Quality Management District:   6.00

Current South Coast Air Basin:   1.00

Alt Fuel/Tech Reg Fee:   3.00

Use/Sales Tax:   11,556.00

Reflectorized License Plate Fee:   1.00 spacer.gif

Total Registration Fees:   $935.00 spacer.gif

Total Use/Sales Tax:   $11,556.00

Grand Total Registration Fees:   $12,491.00

That's right...she needs to pay over $12K just to get it from the game show.

Know what's even funnier? If the TV offers to pay the taxes, but doesn't declare it as a gift (so they can deduct the expense), you have to pay taxes on their paying of taxes.

You know you could sell that car for under market value and, even after paying taxes and fees, still come out with 6 figures (or close to it), right?
