Domain Registrar Options

Question

I currently have my domain name with 1And1 and I am paying $10.99 a year.

I am looking to pay less then this. Options?

I think Hover is $10, but waiting on them to confirm.

I've been using Name.com and I think they're great in terms of domain management. Their transfers are $8.xx and renewals are $10.99, but you can usually get free whois privacy with a promo code.

I don't think there are many (reputable) registrars that have renewals <$10

Hover is $15, but I'm not sure if they'll increase soon or not, the wholesale division just got a round of price increases.

JTA is right, there are no reputable registrars for <$10. The registry price is already starting to push that price for the gTLDs. Any bulk discounts that they get will go to their thin profit margins. You really shouldn't cheap out with registrars anyway, the cost of fixing any problem (if even fixable at all) is far greater than the few bucks that you'll save per year.

I can't recommend any US registrars, despite some being very good otherwise, like Namecheap - a common recommendation here. Unfortunately despite the well meaninged registrars they are simply not safe from arbitrary interference.

I would recommend these: EasyDNS ($$$, best, Canadian), Gandi ($$, good, French), Hover ($$, good, Canadian). They're all more expensive than your current one but they are all very well regarded and as far as we can tell so far they are all customer-oriented. EasyDNS in particular is not afraid to defend their customers from ######. The other two haven't demonstrated much action so it's hard to tell exactly how committed they are, but they have been taking the right positions and attitudes on issues - more than can be said for most registrars.

I've been using namecheap.com for the last 3 years. They usually have good incentive deals to transfer domains to them (I did mine during the godaddy en-mass departure).
