New Toys !

Recommended Posts

I bought some new toys today, and am using it as a starting point for changing some of my views.

I bought a ThinkPad Carbon X1 - touchscreen (of course) and Windows 8.1

Now I can try Win8 out for the 1st time with a touchscreen, and then decide if I hate it as much as I currently do, or learn to like it.

The fact the pc boots up in 2 seconds is pretty cool :)

Also bought the 64GB Sandisk Extreme USB3 flash drive.  I have the 32GB already, but since the 64GB was on sale, I snagged it.  The fact it is one of the fastest USB on the planet - and 64GB @ $60 is a no-brainer IMO.

I am using my desktop right now, as the Carbon is updating some things - but so far - I can see where win8 is potentially cool - now I just have to learn it.

I have a couple of x1 carbons, and an acer s7.  While I like the lenovo name, the accessories that come with it and the actual quality of the acer is really what really makes me like the acer more even though the x1 has the i7 processor in it compared the the i5 the acer has.  Both boot very fast, both are very capable ultrabooks.  My acer came with a nice velvet portfolio to carry it in, ac adapter, usb ethernet dongle, vga dongle, and bluetooth mouse (it doesn't say it comes with any of this so imagine my surprise when I opened the box).

You spent all that money on a laptop with an OS you already irrationally "hate", the touchscreen will likely not make a difference, since you already have made up your mind

Imo the touch screen helps better the experience with Windows 8. Much easier to navigate the start screen and bring up the charms bar.

It is a lot easier to swipe from the sides than to use the mouse.

Also, people in Boston hate Windows 8 because they can't pronounce "charms bar."

I obviously havent made up my mind since i started this thread to say, I am going to try it out.  And if you dont see how a touchscreen can change someone's views of win8 - then you are just arguing for the sake of arguing (because every thread has to have at least 1 person to nitpick stuff)

And how is it irrational ?  Ever since it came out, I hated the metro GUI.  Now with a touchscreen, I am trying to give an honest chance to like it.

Fixed that for you.

:p

Post some pictures or something.

Pics or what "didnt happen" ?

I dont get it

It's just as easy to navigate with a mouse/keyboard too though. Once you learn the keyboard shortcuts/know what you're doing, it's fine. The touchscreen just makes it more intuitive in most cases (things like the charms bar are "user hostile" regardless of how you interact with the machine - once you know how to get it, it's easy but not made obvious enough for new users). I use Win8.1 on touch and non touch machines daily and have no trouble switching between the two.

To be honest, I doubt the touchscreen will make you hate it any less. The OS (in my personal experience) is not inherently easier/better with a touchscreen. If you're sticking within the Modern UI environment of the OS and using Windows Store apps, you may find things a little easier to use but that will be down to personal preference though. Outside Modern UI, you might find the touchscreen a little clumsy (but once again that is personal preference). On my own touchscreen ultrabook I find I'm using the mouse/keyboard predominantly and usually only using the touchscreen for scrolling, pinch to zoom, interacting with the start screen (but I have no trouble with using the mouse there, I just utilize the best interaction method available on the machine I'm using) etc. If your willing to give it more time and you learn all the little tricks and shortcuts to use the OS well, you may find yourself liking it more. The OS really rubs people the wrong way, there is no doubt but if your willing to put the time into it (and open minded about it) it will reward you. That is my 2 cents, take with a grain of salt.

I am having an issue sometimes closing things.  It is such a fine line (literally) between grabbling the top of a window to swipe it down to close, or open up some other type of popup menu.

The Store seems kinda thin, but having useful apps on the Metro start is cool.

I am waiting for the 8.1 update next month.  I guess I can run a Win7 VM if I have too, but I am trying to avoid that.

I still dont like the GUI for Office 2013, so I will keep using Office 2010.  I think it is the washed-out overuse of white or white-ish in 2013 that I dont like.

And to be honest, since getting this the other day, I havent spent more than 15 minutes on my desktop.

The only thing I regret is not having the screen with the really high res. - this one is 1600x900.

As for the 64GB Sandisk Extreme - DAMN that thing is crazy fast !

I recently purchased a Surface Pro 2 (256gb) and I know what you mean about not spending much time on the desktop side. On my desktop and notebook I spend the VAST MAJORITY of my time in the desktop environment and I especially hate using the metro apps, mostly because they are fullscreen. But on my Surface I find the Metro side of the OS to be very awesome. When you're using your hands to navigate everything it makes sense to only have one window open at a time. I don't think I've ever closed an app by swiping down while in the app yet, I'll have to try that. The Surface has a pretty thick border, so it might be a better experience...not sure. To close Metro apps I've been swiping from the left and pulling them down from the app switcher...I think I would like just swiping down from the top.

Why would I lie about something so trivial ?  Its not like I am trying to convince a bunch of strangers I have an Aventador or something outrageous.

If someone claims they have a BLT sandwich, do people say "pics or you're lying" ?

Its nothing fancy, just a small computer.  I could understand if I said I had a 20,000 sq ft house in Malibu someone might say "post pics that must be nice"

Why on earth would someone say they bought something like this, when they didnt - what would they gain ?  It is almost as silly as when you go to pay for something that cost a couple of dollars with a bank card, and they ask for an ID... if I had someone else's ID, I would be buying things a little more expensive than a candy bar and a Diet Coke.

Be sure to pull it all the way down, I mean 100% from top to bottom.  I was trying to show the computer to my father, trying to get him to get one, and he had a tough time dragging it all the way to bottom of screen.  But that might be because he and computers are sworn enemies for life. :/
