Guest
LOL. Gee I wonder why Mywebsearch has 60,000,000 .. could it be because they hijack everyones homepage? Same goes for ASK. Not really. It is because they provide amazing service that protects your privacy and allows for very private searching. Thus their popularity keeps rising and they keep getting more and more users. Max Norris
Wow Google absolutely dominates. Not really a surprise considering it's the default in a gazillion devices and most browsers and most of the time you're not asked which you want to use. Max Norris
I knew it would be substantially ahead of the competition but not by 300%! Nah, still not surprised really. Just look at how many devices use it by default out of the box (hundreds of millions), throw on hundreds of millions more desktop browsers that also use it by default out of the box, and then consider that almost none of them actually ask you which one you want to use, nah not surprised at all. I'm curious when they'll force ballot boxes on mobile devices though.

Does everyone use Google as default because it's so popular, or is the fact that everyone uses it as default what makes it popular?

Wyn6
I get what you're saying and I agree, but it's like a chicken or egg scenario. Does everyone use Google as default because it's so popular, or is the fact that everyone uses it as default what makes it popular? I think it's like Kleenex brand tissue here in the states (not sure how many other countries it's in). Many people use Kleenex over any other brand of tissue and indeed a lot of people refer to tissue as Kleenex regardless of brand. "Hey, do you have any Kleenex?" is uttered by many people when any tissue will do. It's like saying Google it when all people want to do is look up some sort of information which most search engines can find. Sure, this isn't a 1:1 comparison, but just trying to bring the gist across. Google became super popular and a household name as well as a newly minted verb. So, for all intents and purposes, it is the default. Many people Google something, but fewer people Bing something and still fewer Yahoo or DuckDuckGo something. Does everyone use Google as default because it's so popular, or is the fact that everyone uses it as default what makes it popular? Exactly that, the chicken and the egg scenario. Regarding Bing, for example, people from MS have many times said that the more people use Bing, the more data the engine will have to process, the more it will learn, the better it will get, the more people will use Bing, the ... and so on. Previous to Bing, MS weren't even trying that hard. But now that Bing is behind Twitter, Facebook, all Windows devices, it will only get better. That is, of course, the competitors (mainly Google) will also only get better.
