Gerowen Posted July 15, 2014 Share Posted July 15, 2014 Anybody here run a winch on their pickup truck? I'm thinking of getting one for pulling other people, or myself, out of a hole when stuck. I'm not particularly familiar with brands or prices and am just wondering if there's anything in particular I should look for or avoid. Right now I'm pretty much using scrap metal to pay the bills and keep gas in the truck, so spending a boat-load of money on one is not an option.I drive a 1999 Dodge Dakota Sport with the 3.9L V-6 magnum. When I'm empty with my trailer connected I weigh in at about 4,900 pounds (The trailer is 17'x5' of 2"x4" c channel steel with 1"x4" deck board flooring). I regularly haul loads of metal totaling between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds, so I would like it to be able to pull the weight of the vehicle plus a load of up to 3,000 pounds if something happens and I go into a ditch with a loaded trailer attached. My pickup also doubles as a rescue vehicle when family and friends break down, so it would be handy to be able to pull cars a few feet to get them out of a ditch or something. Suggestions?
