Dual display problem with elementaryOS

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I have a problem in elementary OS with my dual monitors setup. If I choose to mirror the displays, the resolution falls to 640x480, no other choices available. In Windows, this is not the issue, I can set whatever resolution I want for each display. I have a nvidia GPU, my main display is connected via VGA cable and the other one (a TV, not a monitor) via DVI-HDMI cable.

So, is this a Linux driver issue or elementaryOS/Ubuntu 12.04 issue? :(

I don't think you installed drivers.

:/ ...seriously? That's your opinion? Of course I installed the damn drivers, I can show you a screenshot from the nvidia control panel with driver version. Everything works as it should, except for mirroring.

If you don't want my help, just tell me.

Is this through Nvidia CP, or through the OS Display settings?

I want anyone's help, but come on, "I don't think you installed the drivers"??...

Anyway, what do you mean by "is this through Nvidia CP...."? I am trying to setup the mirror displays via the OS display settings, if this is what you mean. Extending displays, resolution setting, everything is ok, except for this problem.

I don't know if it matters, but I don't install the drivers from nvidia's site, I install them from the repository (nvidia-current).

Which nvidia driver version and which videocard?

I think it's a driver version problem, some newer drivers work bad with ubuntu and multiple displays.

Works for me with the included Nouveau drivers...

Is it fine in other operating systems? Does extending (regular multimonitor) work properly? For mirroring the displays should have at least some matching resolutions.

Display mirroring is one of the easiest tasks and was working here all the time even with crappy ati drivers. However I don't know what screen config tool elementary relies on... But with Ubuntu default gnome KDE it should not be a problem

Yes, in Win mirroring works just fine, I can setup individual resolutions for each monitor. In eOS, this is the only problem, everything else works just fine. eOS Luna is based on Ubuntu 12.04, if this helps.

Driver version is 331.79, on a 8600GT. Again, this was installed via apt-get, not from the nvidia website.

EDIT: This is eOS's display config dialog (not mine), as you can see the mirroring option warns that the resolution may be limited if activated. Guess it's too limited in my case

Try to uninstall the driver and roll with the built-in Nouveau one. For older cards Nouveau is pretty good and might work better than new nVidia drivers.

Using a new driver like 331.79 on a 8600GT card will give problems like these. You can try a older driver or use the nouveau driver which ambroos already suggested.

Personally I would have gotten a newer videocard years ago, this card is more then 7 years old. Even a cheap 30 usd videocard will do a better job then this card  :p

If you want a cheap card I'd suggest the gt210(around 20 usd) and the gt610(around 35 usd) both of these are super cheap. The gt610 is newer and a lot faster but also a few bucks more but still cheap.

Yeah, but it's part of an older PC that I'm doing "experiments" with. :) That is, installing various Linux distros, hackintosh, etc. So I don't really care enough to change it.

I will try an older version of the nvidia driver and see if the problem is fixed.

Try the 96.43.23 driver, this one is quite old but it has still the nvidia config panel which allows you to configure each displays separately from there.
