For those that don't know NPD is a respected source for hardware/software sales. They do U.S. Retail sales only so the numbers do NOT include digital sales. Being U.S. only means the fact that PlayStation is available in more markets have no relevance to the list. The report is released the second Thursday of each month for the prior months sales and ONLY software is published to the public. The hardware numbers are given directly to the platform holders for them to release or not as they choose. The order of the platforms in parenthesis after a title is the order of most sales from most to least.

Software

1. Madden NFL 15 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
2. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
3. Minecraft (360, PS3)
4. The Last of Us (PS4, PS3)
5. Call of Duty: Ghosts (360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, PC, Wii U)
6. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (360, PS3, Wii U, PS4, 3DS, DS, Xbox One, Vita, PC)
7. Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One)
8. Watch Dogs (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, PC)
9. Battlefield 4 (360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
10. The Lego Movie Videogame (360, 3DS, PS3, Wii U, PS4, Xbox One, Vita)

Hardware

Sony:
Below are the PlayStation highlights from the August NPD report:

? PlayStation 4 was #1 in hardware sales for the eighth consecutive month and remains the cumulative leader for next generation game consoles.

? PlayStation led the month for next generation software with Madden NFL 15 for PS4 taking the #1 spot for overall software sales.

? Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Ultimate Evil Edition and Madden NFL 15 had their strongest sales on PS4 and were the biggest third party releases of the month.

? The Last of Us Remastered continues to have strong momentum on PS4; it was the top selling first-party title in August.

? For the third consecutive month, PlayStation was #1 in combined home console hardware sales (PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3).

Microsoft:
Xbox One sales are on a positive trajectory, nearly doubling sales in August in the U.S. compared to July due in part to strong demand for the Xbox One Madden NFL 15?bundle. The holiday season is upon us we?re looking forward to bringing the best value bundles, incredible offers like the ?Buy a Console Get a Game Free? promotion running now and more great games as we gear up for the launches of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, Destiny, Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

Console numbers as well getting thrown around on other various message boards. Can't find a hard source outside of some articles but discussing the closing gap between xbox and PS4.

Aug 2014:

PS4 ~ 175k
XB1 ~ 150k
WiiU ~ 60k
360 ~ 50k
PS3 ~ 27k
Wii ~ 13k

Not bad numbers all around. The ps4 continues a very strong showing in hardware and software, while it looks like the X1 is recovering from its slow start and nearing a tie at the top. The WiiU has fallen back a bit though after its surge thanks to MK8.

The holiday season is really close now, so it will be very interesting to see if the current trends continue.

"? PlayStation led the month for next generation software with Madden NFL 15 for PS4 taking the #1 spot for overall software sales."

NPD does not count games that are in those bundles (read X1) for software sales.

Edit: oh, and where are the sharp numbers from Sony?

Since when does the NPD not count bundled games as software sales? It is just digital games that aren't counted.

If the bundle includes a digital copy of the game than maybe then it's not counted.

xbox one bundles don't include a physical copy of the game, only download code. npd only tracks physical retail copies.

Also, NPD does not include bundled software, which may have skewed the Madden NFL 15 rankings due to the Xbox One bundle.

NPD basically counts retail transactions. As such they don't double count games and consoles. Console bundles ARE counted toward the Console numbers but NOT toward the game (that would be counting two transactions when there was only one). So the Xbox One Madden bundle DOES count toward the Xbox One sales but does NOT count toward Madden sales. Companies use bundles to drive up hardware sales so this makes sense. Note this would even be the case if there was a physical Madden disc in the box it is still just one transaction.

Digital sales are not counted which is why you keep hearing that software sales are down year over year (but offset by greater hardware sales). My personal opinion is that this isn't because people are spending their $$ on hardware instead. I think that instead sales are down and will continue to drop because more and more people are switching to digital versions. Especially now you can pre-load games and have them unlock on midnight of release date... that beats waiting for the Amazon shipment the afternoon of release date and then waiting for the massive installs games require now. Even on fairly slow connections if they open up pre-loads early enough you can have the game down and ready by midnight on launch day.
