What went wrong with my Windows 7 install?

Recommended Posts

My PC runs Windows 7 Home Premium. It?s been working fine for several years. No viruses, malware, I keep it clean?just running fast and smoothly without any problems.

I mention this because I came back from vacation last week and noticed there was 1 important Windows Update to run. So I ran it and went out for dinner and when I returned the craziness started.

It booted to a black screen (with taskbar and icons) but the wireless was gone and there was an X through the ethernet icon. There was a message in the corner that said the version of Windows was not genuine and there was a window asking me to activate Windows.

So I got the Windows key off the sticker on the side of the tower, put it in and got a message that the key is not valid and I would have to call to activate. Then a window opened that said I should choose my country and when I clicked on the drop down arrow the window was blank. When I clicked it again I got a window that said toll free was unavailable, and then it gave a phone # from another country (country code, city code and phone #).

I wound up calling Microsoft and  was told I would have to reformat the system.

My question is, what in the world could have happened?
