BaZurk
Hey all, I have been looking around for what's considered a good temp for the new core i7 5820k chips. With my new build and a 100i liquid cooler i am sitting at 40c. Is this acceptable?
Mindovermaster Moderator Posted September 29, 2014 Moderator Share Posted September 29, 2014 Is this on load or idle? Idle means nothing. Using Prime95 or similar to test your CPU on load, will tell your ample temperature. Rules say that with any CPU, 75C is hot, but ~80-90C is shut off temp. Is that temp idle or full load? you can see the review in here, but even without OC the extreme version of that CPU can get quite hot.
BaZurk
I am overclocked to 4.3Ghtz and the temp is idle.
nosense
Haswell runs super hot, even with a good cooler. Use Intel burn test or prime95 to test stability.

Just ran Intel burn test on High... passed and I peaked out at 93C. was typically around 80ish.
BaZurk
Should I reconsider my setup with those kind of tempts on high stress?
Farchord
Should I reconsider my setup with those kind of tempts on high stress? See, the burn test essentially stresses your CPU over what it should usually be. 93C is high. But if it only peaked that high, I would check some basic stability things, like what kind of thermal paste do you use? If you're afraid, go down a gear or two on your OC. Not all CPUs overclock the same (Not even in the same series).

I don't know too much about CPUs, but I feel 93C is way too hot, even if it's within the tjmax of the processor. And you said you're using an h100i and it's OC'd to 4.3Ghz. What is the voltage at? See if you can incrementally lower the voltage while maintaining stability. Also, like another post said, you might want to reapply a better thermal paste. For reference, my i5-4690K oc'd to 4.5Ghz runs at 29C idle and 49C under full load with an H80i
+Thayios Subscriber² Posted September 29, 2014 Subscriber² Share Posted September 29, 2014 Make sure you have the bracket positioned correctly to allow solid contact - there's a wrong way to rotate it as hard to believe as that is. Also, gently and I do mean gently press on the block while it's under load and see if the temps drop. I run a 3570k @ 4.9/5.0 Ghz (No, not lid removal, 4.9 daily, 5.0 for fun) at 20-30 idle, and 50-60 max under load. H100i
