Hard drive upgrade issue

Recommended Posts

I have my HP Envy M6-K010DX laptop being repaired, that is, having the existing hard drive removed and replaced with a SSD and having the OS restored. I called to check on the status of the repair today, and was informed that the drive was installed and the OS was restored. When the OS updates were applied, a blue screen error came up.

I was really hoping to have a SSD to avoid potentially being in the same place in another two years with needing a replacement hard drive. Another SSD is going to be tested out to see if that helps. In trying to do research on this particular configuration, I am not seeing anything that indicates there are incompatibilities with installing a SSD in this particular laptop.

It could just be an issue with the updates, some are known to cause BSOD's. Has the technician flashed the latest BIOS on to the laptop? I had a laptop that would lock up completely when Virtualization was enabled with a VM, the latest BIOS cured it. It's worth a shot. Is it being repaired by HP or a third party "repairer"?

were 'they' just cloning/restoring the hard drive? or were they installing a fresh OS on the new SSD?

The OP says "that the drive was installed and the OS was restored. When the OS updates were applied, a blue screen error came up." so it sounds like a fresh install if updates are being installed.

that's why i asked. he said "the OS was restored" which led me to believe that it was a restore-from-clone situation.

A third party (Best Buy) is fixing the computer. Given that the computer didn't have any optical drive, I don't have any recovery media. I was informed that the hard drive could be changed out and Windows could be restored. The only other options I have are to either order recovery media from HP or buy another copy of Windows.

I have to assume that perhaps the OS is being restored from a clone type of setup, but no personal data is coming off the drive unless I pay extra for that. I have a docking station that I hope will allow me to put in the non-working hard drive and get data off it.

"A third party (Best Buy)"

Yeah good luck ;)

You have a lic for the OS with the OEM, so you just need install media - you don't know anyone you can borrow from, work? etc.. Sure you could buy the recovery media - normal 10-20$

How come you didn't create recovery media to USB when you got the thing? There are plenty of people here that could of walked you through install OS to SSD, or even for that matter just cloning it..

Curious how much BB is charging for this service - prob more than a new computer with a SSD costs ;)

I'm only paying for the drive.

From what I am finding out, the initial install of Windows onto the SSD worked without any problems. When the Windows updates were applied, a BSOD error came up. Windows was installed again onto the SSD and this time without updates. When the computer was restarted, supposedly the mouse stopped working and then another BSOD error. I guess it just wasn't meant to be to have a SSD drive. :( I did a search for "hp envy m6-k010dx ssd" and the third search result is a Youtube video showing an upgrade with a SSD. It seems like it should be possible to have a SSD, but it just isn't going to workout. Is it possible that the SSD isn't working out because of the issue with the original hard drive or is there some other hardware issue making a SSD incompatible with the computer?

I have to get a WD HDD (1TB; upgrade from a 750GB factory drive). Hopefully there's no issues with that and I can get my computer back soon.

I don't see the option for ordering recovery media for my computer.

well I don't have your serial number or service number to be able to lookup the recovery media directly.. If you PM me that info I could look into it for you.

There should be no reason that a SSD wouldn't work vs a normal SSD - sounds like the box might have other issues. Memory problems maybe?

edit:

And here you go - 45$ plus tax and shipping like $52 bucks total

Looks like $52 to your door

Well it seems Best Buy can't fix the computer. Updates supposedly didn't work when the SSD was installed and now supposedly didn't work with the HDD. It seems now it might be the motherboard. I don't understand how that can just fail after two years and conviently after the warranty expires.

Here's the latest... Apparently now the mouse stops working after a period of time which is why the motherboard is now suspect. The mouse worked when the computer was brought in. I could just use an external mouse but it isn't exactly going to be ideal. Just don't understand this whole situation.

So your laptop worked before you took it to Best Buy, you took it to them to swap out th hard drive with a new SSD and now your laptop is no longer working like it was prior to them taking it?

If I am understanding this correctly you have to DEMAND they got it back to the same exact state it was before you dropped it off. Do not just let them get away with bricking your laptop.

The computer wouldn't take the SSD - I don't know why. They then put in a HDD which now works. There wasn't an issue with the mouse prior to it being dropped off, but now mysteriously there is. The computer isn't bricked. From just reinstalling Windows and running updates, I don't know what could cause the mouse to stop working.
