Deep_Level_Shark
My HP laptop PAVILION 15 N012TX crashed and HP Support vendor has replaced the Motherboard. now I get Windows Activation prompt when i start my system. (windows 8) When I clicked Windows Activate ...nothing happens . I get error Looks like I get new product key after mother board replacement . How do I activate now ? Should I contact HP or contact Microsoft ? Shall I give them product key and machine details ? Can I solve this problem myself online without waiting for them to fix ? If you had to replace your MOBO and still have a valid copy of Win8 you need to use/reactivate...then you need to call MS so they can allow activation again. You will need to call them, provide them with your info proving you have a valid copy of Windows, and they can release the key and allow you to active it again. EDIT: Missed where it said HP PC. You may need to call HP on that one if it is an OEM PC. A mobo replacement shouldnt effect activation if it is the same/close to same board. We have mobos swapped out from Dell every now and then and no activation of windows is required after.
Nick H. Supervisor Posted October 27, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted October 27, 2014 See here. According to that, you might try making sure that your date and time are correct before activating, and also that you have an Internet connection. If that doesn't work, you should probably do as techbeck says and phone Microsoft as they are the ones that deal with the activation, not HP. A mobo replacement shouldnt require Windows to be reactivated as long as it is the same mobo from the OEM.

techbeck
Yes. my clock at system tray is wrong. How do I fix it ? I'll try activating windows again after fixing clock date time. Right click on the clock in the system tray and select Adjust Date/Time. They try to active windows. Shouldnt require a reboot.
